(9 6/16 x 8 1/4 inches) 1472 pages. All edges gilt. Illustration on title page of Moses holding the Tablets and Aaron burning incense. The two leaves listing the subscribers is laid in, as facsimiles. Beautifully bound in half leather by a master bookbinder. The first page of introduction has an illustration of a lone sailor in boat with sun shining and two cities on his right and left. Preface by Johannes Christianus Clodius. Divisional titles. I: (44), 666; II: pp. 705, (55) pages. Large 4to. Darlow and Moule 4148. This is a 1740 reprint of the E. van der Hooght text with the addition of Schmidt's Latin translation. The final leaves contain the variant readings based on comparison with the Bomberg, Plantin, Athias and other editions. Last page is soiled. A dozen pages have scholarly notes in Hebrew and Latin, in tiny script, almost all of them in pencil. These may enhance but certainly do not detract from this copy.

ORIGINAL-DOKUMENT (3 S. kl 4 to, leicht gebräunt, Stempel) mit Ort, Datum, eigenhändiger Unterschrift signiert neben seinem roten Wachssiegel Leipzig, 24.III.1787.

Condition: sehr guter Zustand. Aquatinta in Braun, 1794, auf festem chamoisfarbenem Velin, unter der Darstellung in der Platte bezeichnet Rom ausgegeben im September 1794". 24,3:19,7 cm. Literatur: Nagler 49; Andresen/Heller 6, II (von II) mit der Schrift. Seine Ausbildung als Maler, Zeichner und Radierer erfuhr Mechau bis 1770 in Leipzig bei A.F. Oeser (1717-1799) sowie bei Chr. B. Rode (1725-1797), B.N. Le Sueur (1714-1783) und P. J. Bardou (1745-1814) in Berlin. Anschließend war er 1770-1773 Schüler von G.B. Casanova (1730-1795) in Dresden. Als Pensionär des sächsischen Kurfürsten ging er gemeinsam mit H. Füger (1751-1818) nach Rom, wo er vor allen Dingen von Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) und J.Ph. Hackert (1737-1807) beeinflußt wurde. 1780-1790 lebte er ohne feste Anstellung in Dresden, anschließend wieder in Rom, dem er aber 1798 wegen der politischen Wirren den Rücken kehrte und ließ sich anschließend als Akademielehrer endgültig in Dresden nieder.
