Southwick apologises for not repaying a loan from Corning, giving as a reason the lack of success of his book 'A Layman's Apology': 'I have not to this day, except paying the Printers out of the subscription, received one hundred dollars.' His lecture receipts from 'the Western district' have also been disappointing, 'for I met with so much opposition in some quarters, that it nullified, as it were, my success in others; so that all I accomplished, was to keep my head above water, excepting, that amid much embarrassment, and many privations, I have at last brought to perfection, or rather completion, an entire system of Self Education, of the utmost importance to the rising generation'. He has been told by 'Messrs. Carey and Lee, of Philadelphia, that so soon as there shall be a favourable change in our monied concerns they will purchase the Copy Right of my Lectures on Self Education - The Harpers promise the same as to my Course of Bible Lectures'. In a postscript Southwick boasts of 'more string to my bow - my son succeeds in establishing my Family Newspaper - for on his means, and industry as a Printer, it entirely relies for its publication [.] You may judge of his merit, when I assure you that he saved out of his hard-earnings, as a Journeyman Printer three years, enough to enable him to purchase & pay for half the Printing-Office of Messrs. Bagshot Park was the residence of her brother the duke (Silly Billy'), to whom she was very much attached. The siblings were not entirely accepted by the Royal Family due to the unequal nature of their parents' marriage. 3pp, 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded for postage. Taylor, who is not named but is clearly the recipient, has marked the letter as 'Private'. Good firm signature 'Sophia Matilda'. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I did not receive your Communication dated the 12th untill [sic] this morning, and I hasten to express my thanks for your Attention, and to request that you would have the Goodness to forward the small Parcel containing the kind Legacy from the late Queen at Wirtemberg to me at Bagshot Park in an [office packing?] as you sent those destined for the Dss of Gloucester which she received yesterday -'. She sends wishes for Lady Taylor's continuing health, 'notwithstanding the bad weather which we have had'.

Condition: Gut. Bildgröße: 20 x 18 cm (Blattgröße: 38,5 x 27,8 cm). *Carl Friedrich Christian Mohs (geb. 29. Januar 1773 in Gernrode (Harz); gest. 29. September 1839 in Agordo, Italien), war ein deutsch-österreichischer Mineraloge. Mohs entwickelte etwa gleichzeitig, aber nach eigenen Angaben unabhängig von Christian Samuel Weiss ein Konzept der Kristallsysteme, das er 1822 veröffentlichte. - Das Bildnis entstand als frühes Porträt von Kriehuber bereits 1832, nach dem Tod 1839 wurde die Druckplatte wohl nocheinmal verwendet unter Hinzufügung der Schrift mit Lebensdaten. - Sauber und sehr gut erhalten. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1001.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with two postmarks (one of Pimlico), to 'R. Ackermann Esqre | 101. Strand -'. On aged and worn paper, with one short closed tear. A good letter, full of content revealing of Ackermann's business and the art trade in general. The first paragraph reads: 'I am extremely sorry the last Fashions have not met your approbation. The inflamed state of my eye rendered it impossible for me to engrave them myself, and I calculated on the known talent of Mr. Chsman [i.e. Thomas Cheesman (1760-1834)] to be my substitute. I lament much that he has failed, and quite ashamed he should have returned the drawings so very dirty for which I hold my pupil [i.e. his eye, not his student] much to blame. My eye is now much better and I trust in future to do them myself and give you that gratification which has given stability to our long friendship Believe me ever zealous to fulfil your commissions however difficult I may find them sometimes to execute.' The second paragraph concerns 'the head of the King Modelled by Pistrucci' (i.e. George IV's initial coinage bust), which Agar asked 'Mr. Gindall' to tell Ackermann about. He suggests that he 'had better write or call on Vendramini in Brompton Row and learn the direction and further particulars - He [i.e. Pistrucci] is in hot water at the Mint but that may make no difference should you like the head - it was modelled immediately from the King, and Vendramini promised it if I would undertake to engrave it -'. He ends by reporting that he 'drank tea with Mr. Morant of Bond Street', whom he thinks 'would lend you some of his prints or pictures for your intended publication should you be still in the same mind'. The publication he is referring to is the first of the literary annuals, The Forget-Me-Not, first published in 1823.

September 1839 in Agordo, Italien), war ein deutsch-österreichischer Mineraloge. Mohs entwickelte etwa gleichzeitig, aber nach eigenen Angaben unabhängig von Christian Samuel Weiss ein Konzept der Kristallsysteme, das er 1822 veröffentlichte. - Außenränder gebräunt, sonst gut erhalten. A highly unusual and digressive letter, from James Epps assistant astronomer to John Lee, giving details of how to pack an instrument to be sent to the Cape of Good Hope, a matter in which Epps' wife has the final say. Epps was a self-taught astronomer, who became Secretary to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1830 and moved into the service of the gentleman astronomer Lee in 1838. Through the 1830s Lee had set up one of the finest private observatories in the world, at Hartwell House near Aylesbury. The letter begins with a lengthy account of a storm at Hartwell, with descriptions of lightning, potential damage to the buildings, and the subsequent double rainbow Epps observed. Epps then moves on to arrangements for sending an instrument to the Cape, which must be destined for Sir Thomas Maclear (1794-1879), by then 'Astronomer Royal' at the famous Cape observatory. Maclear kept up an extensive correspondence with Lee around this time, with Maclear sending specimens and observations, and Lee keeping Maclear up to date on developments in England and arranging for instruments to be sent, as here. Epps writes that "Some anxious consultations have been held as to the propriety of packing" the "famous 'Instrument' for the Cape". Epps then reports that his wife defers in these matters to the authority of "Mrs Phillips" who has knowledge of sending delicate articles to the Cape: "She recommends particularly that it be packed in a tin-case & hermetically sealed which, she says, the London Confectioners & others are in the habit of doing, & exhausting the air for the purpose - Upon this recommendation & mature consideration we have thought the best way would be to send it to you - only partially packed, in order to its being finally secured according to lollipop science." Epps goes on to discuss William Henry Smyth and the composition of star catalogues. The exact instrument under discussion may be identifyable, as much of the Lee/Maclear correspondence has been preserved at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies, Aylesbury.
