dust-jacket torn at top of spine and across isbn number on rear panel, very good light blue cloth, but with a tiny 1cm dent and tear in spine hinge at top. BRANDON, WILLIAM. New worlds for old: reports from the New World and their effect on the development of social thought in Europe, 1500-1800. Athens, Ohio: Ohio University Press, 1986, x, 226pp., . Explorers, soldiers, missionaries, and colonists writing from every part of the New World repeatedly emphasized certain fundamental strangenesses in New World ^societies, especially the equality, community, and liberty so frequently observed among New World peoples. Influential European thinkers from Thomas More, Ronsard, and Montaigne to Rousseau to Marx and Engels repeatedly discussed the new and different values of these reported New World ways. New Worlds for Old examines the cumulative effect of such New World visions on the progress in the Old World - particularly in France - of certain revolutionary social ideas. Beginning with late fifteenth and early sixteenth century Spanish and Italian accounts, Brandon traces their impact through political, economic, philosophical, and religious thinkers in Europe's Early Modem Age. Drawing upon a wealth of archival sources, Brandon argues that though the Old World may have conquered the New for European culture and civilization, the New World engraved upon the Old, especially via seventeenth and eighteenth century France, changes as profound in some respects as those it suffered. Amid the social and political turmoil of early modem Europe few glimpses of the New World, with its strange and vivid inhabitants, exotic landscapes, and fabulous treasures, were as productive of change as those which revealed novel attitudes toward the foundations of society: property, ! authority, liberty, and the purpose of life. While acknowledging the great importance of our European heritage in understanding basic concepts of liberty, Brandon's study demonstrates that the very thinkers who helped to form those concepts were themselves influenced by reports from the New World. New Worlds for Old thus offers an account of the earliest influence of the Americas upon the European intellectual tradition and a revisionist perspective on the American political and philosophical heritage. 9780821408186 ISBN 0821408186.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good to Fine. PBO (Paperback Original) True First Ed. 252 pages; Goodreads; Fourth Mansions was inspired by Teresa of Ávila's Interior Castle, and contains quotations from the book, which quotations Lafferty uses as chapter headings. The Interior Castle is a metaphor for an individual's soul; its different rooms, different states of the soul. In the middle of the Castle the soul is in the purest state, which equals Heaven. Lafferty uses more complex symbols to bring colorfully into life his many-sided tale of an individual's reaching towards Heaven or Truth. Take a trip thru a psychedelic reality, with seven very special people blending to create a higher form of humanity: A laughing man living alone on a mountaintop, guarding the world. The Returnees: men who live again & again, century after century. A dog-ape "Plappergeist," who can only be seen out of the corner of one's eye. A young man named Foley, very much like us, who begins to find out about the above people & things, & how they're reshaping the world! >>Scuffing to backcover; cover creaisng; Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. BOOK PAPERBACK. Librairie Arthème Fayard, Collection "Les Grandes Etudes Contemporaines",1959, in 8 (22 x 13,5 cm), 379 pages.
