Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Letters of Asa Gray ? Complete 2-Volume Set (1893) A Rare Glimpse into the Life and Correspondence of America's Foremost Botanist Own this essential and beautifully preserved two-volume set, documenting the life and work of Asa Gray (1810-1888). As the botanist who unified the taxonomic knowledge of North American flora, Gray was not only a titan of his field but also one of the few confidants with whom Charles Darwin shared his groundbreaking research prior to the publication of On the Origin of Species (1859). Collector & Bibliographic Highlights: Complete 2-Volume Set: A matching, pristine first edition set, edited by his wife, Jane Loring Gray. Historical Significance: These letters offer an intimate window into the 19th-century scientific revolution. Gray's correspondence reveals his complex intellectual journey as a devout Christian grappling with Darwin's theory of natural selection, ultimately seeking to reconcile evolution with his own faith. Bibliophilic Quality: Published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company in 1893, this edition features the classic, high-quality cloth binding of the era with "Top Edge Gilt" (T.e.g.) edges. Condition & Material Details: State: Very Good. Details: An exceptionally clean and tight set. The pages remain remarkably bright and well-cared for, a testament to its preservation. A cornerstone acquisition for private libraries focusing on the history of science, 19th-century American biography, botanical studies, or the development of evolutionary theory. [Store Loc. 2.6].

ABOUT: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957. Though established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute,[1] the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The IAEA has its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The IAEA has two "Regional Safeguards Offices" which are located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and in Tokyo, Japan. The IAEA also has two liaison offices which are located in New York City, New York, and in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition, the IAEA has three laboratories located in Vienna and Seibersdorf, Austria, and in Monaco. The IAEA serves as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and nuclear power worldwide. The programs of the IAEA encourage the development of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, provide international safeguards against misuse of nuclear technology and nuclear materials, and promote nuclear safety (including radiation protection) and nuclear security standards and their implementation. The IAEA and its former Director General, Mohamed ElBaradei, were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that was awarded on October 7, 2005. The IAEA's current Director General is Yukiya Amano. In 1953, the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, proposed the creation of an international body to both regulate and promote the peaceful use of atomic power (nuclear power), in his Atoms for Peace address to the UN General Assembly. In September 1954, the United States proposed to the General Assembly the creation of an international agency to take control of fissile material, which could be used either for nuclear power or for nuclear weapons. This agency would establish a kind of "nuclear bank." The United States also called for an international scientific conference on all of the peaceful aspects of nuclear power. By November 1954, it had become clear that the Soviet Union would reject any international custody of fissile material, but that a clearing house for nuclear transactions might be possible. From August 8 to August 20, 1955, the United Nations held the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland. During 1956, an IAEA Statute Conference was held to draft the founding documents for the IAEA, and the IAEA Statute was completed at a conference in 1957. Because free neutrons are unstable, they can be obtained only from nuclear disintegrations, nuclear reactions, and high-energy reactions (such as in cosmic radiation showers or accelerator collisions). Free neutron beams are obtained from neutron sources by neutron transport. For access to intense neutron sources, researchers must go to specialist facilities, such as the ISIS facility in the United Kingdom, which is currently the world's most intense pulsed neutron and muon source. The neutron's lack of total electric charge makes it difficult to steer or accelerate them. Charged particles can be accelerated, decelerated, or deflected by electric or magnetic fields. These methods have little effect on neutrons beyond a small effect of an inhomogeneous magnetic field because of the neutron's magne. Book.

London: printed for the author, at the College of Physicians, in Warwick Lane.-- This is volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, the first 4 volumes in an eventual series of seven on natural history. Primarily birds, but also includes plants, animals, fish and habitats. Pages are numbered in volume sequence. ~~ Excerpt from preface: The wisdom and power of God are manifest to all rational creatures, from a contemplation of his wonderful works in the creation of this world: He hath formed every beast of the field, bird of the air, and fish of the waters: he hath also formed every tree and plant; every creeping insect was made by Him. All that the earth, air, or waters produce were created by God's power. Now man being the only rational being in this world, it seemeth plain by natural light, that the dominion of all creatures was given to him by God; therefore since man's obligation to God is greater than that of any other creature, his acts of humiliation, adoration and gratitude ought to be in some degree profortionable to the favour and benefits he hath received. Amongst the many acts of gratitude we owe to God, it may be accounted one, to study and contemplate the perfections and beauties of his works of creation. Every new discovery must necessarily raise in us a fresh sense of the greatness, wisdom and power of God: He hath so ordered things that almost every part of the creation is for our benefit, either to the support of our being, the delight of our senses, or the agreeable exercise of the rational faculty. etc. ~~ Firmly readable. Paperbacks : soft cover editions in very good, like new clean condition. Typical slightly used books with some slight wear to edges and spine. As to be expected with used books, there may be some minor bumping, creases, and/or scuffs from being moved around the shop. Overall a wonderful replica editions, excellent resource and reading enjoyment. They're undated, circa 1999. About the Author/Creator: George Edwards FRS (3 April 1694 - 23 July 1773) was an English naturalist and ornithologist, known as the "father of British ornithology". Over a period of 21 years, Edwards published seven volumes containing descriptions and hand-coloured etchings of birds. In a few cases, he depicted other animals. None of the species were native to the British Isles. The first four volumes were published between 1743 and 1751 with the title A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. The three subsequent volumes were published between 1758 and 1764 with the title Gleanings Of Natural History. The volumes contain a total of 362 hand-coloured etchings of which 317 depict birds. The etchings were all drawn by Edwards. He numbered the plates consecutively through the seven volumes. -- Source Wikipedia. ~ We appreciate your consideration of one of our books, art prints or novelty items.
