Cet ouvrage a d'abord paru en feuilleton dans la revue "Le Tour du Monde" à partir de 1866. Il est remarquablement illustré de 5 plans en couleurs de Kyoto, Osaka, Yedo (dépliant), Asaksa Imato et Yokohama, et d'une grande carte du Japon, de deux planches représentant des spécimens de syllabaires japonais (Katakana et Hirakana) ainsi que de 476 illustrations sur bois dans le texte et hors-texte. (Cordier, Japonica, 670). Aimé Humbert (1819-1900), homme politique suisse, fut envoyé par son pays en mission diplomatique au Japon en novembre 1862. Il profita de son long séjour pour établir un panorama complet de ce pays. Les illustrations réalisés d'après des croquis et des photographies, mais aussi d'après des estampes japonaises du temps, en font un témoignage rare du Japon à l'époque de la décadence des mikado. Le 6 février 1864, il obtint du gouvernement shogunal des Tokugawa un traité d'amitié et de commerce.
