Add to basket8vo, pp. vii, [1 (blank)], 165, [1 (blank)], [2 (index, blank)], with half-title, large folding map at end; offset to half of half-title, variable foxing throughout (heavier to first and final leaves); a good copy with the original printed wrappers laid down, printed in orange, black, yellow, blue, and green; some staining, a few short closed tears to lower cover.Scarce first edition thus of Baldelli's sixteenth-century translation of this guide to Jerusalem for pilgrims by the Dutch cartographer Christian van Adrichem, instrumental in popularising the Stations of the Cross and the basis for maps of the Holy Land well into the eighteenth century. The Catholic priest Adrichem (15331585) was expelled from his native Delft in the wake of the Reformation and died in Cologne, where his biblical atlas Theatrum terrae sanctae et biblicarum historiarum was printed in 1590. Although he had never visited Jersualem, the work includes a detailed plan of the city and its surroundings in the time of Christ, including over 250 numbered locations of biblical significance described at length in the text. Pictured are, inter alia, the palaces of David, Solomon, Herod, and Agrippa, and the Temple (also depicting a High Priest), as well as Golgotha and the Via Dolorosa. Adrichem encourages readers to follow the Way of the Cross without leaving home, making an interior pilgrimage of sorts 'within the temple or the chamber of the imagination' (p. 67, trans.). The present edition reissues Baldelli's Italian translation of 1594 (Vero ritratto della città di Gierusalemme), which in the foreword is described as having fallen into obscurity, being unknown to Mazzuchelli. The publication of this edition was prompted by the discovery of a copy of Baldelli's translation at a convent in Florence, and adds a work on the death of the Virgin by Luigi Grassi, author of an 1872 history of bishops and archbishops of Genoa. OCLC finds three copies in the US (Harvard, Illinois, Yale), and none in the UK. Not in Library Hub. Language: Italian.

Attractive engraved architectural t-p with allegorical figures and biblical scenes; 7 fold-out and 5 double maps of Palestine and the allotments of the tribes of Israel; decorated initials and grotesque tailpieces. Light browning in places, intermittent light marginal oil stains, occasional spots, small paper flaw to blank section at p. 93, tiny marginal loss at p. 125, gutter of first fol. repaired. Maps generally in very good condition, occasional light spotting, slight marginal soiling or fraying with minor loss mainly at folds to 1, 8, 9 and 12, light browning to 6, 7, 8 and 11, slight offsetting to 4 and 5. A good, well-margined, very large copy in contemporary vellum over pasteboards, spine in five compartments, raised bands, contemporary inked lettering, early shelfmark label at foot, upper joint a bit loose. C17 pasted printed ex-libris 'Ex Biblio. Miss. Sti Josephi Lugdun.' and later red library stamp of Seminary Le Puy (Lyon) to t-p, autograph 'Gaspar Gyrod em[ps]it sibi viginti francis. anno 1681. die 9 februarii'. A good, lavishly illustrated and unusually complete copy, in fine impression, of this superb biblical atlas. Christian van Adrichem (or Adrichomius, 1533-85) was a Catholic theologian who was forced to flee from the Convent of St Barbara in Delft to Cologne to avoid Protestant persecutions. In addition to an historical account of the life of Christ, he published his very successful 'Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarum' (1590), of which this is the sixth edition. 'Theatrum' brought together theories dating back to medieval times and late antiquityi.e., world history as sacred history; maps as texts where history and geography, time and space, coexistas well as more recent disciplines like chorography, i.e., the illustrated study of the topography and history of specific regions. The first part provides a description of ancient Palestine and the antiquities of Jerusalem, with the visual guidance of handsome depictions of the Holy Land, the allotments of the tribes of Israel (with hundreds of cities) and a bird's-eye-view plan of Jerusalem. The first and last of these maps are frequently missing in recorded copies but finely preserved in this one. Produced in 1584, the plan of Jerusalem is a magnificent scholarly reconstruction of the city at the time of Christ, which remained unrivalled in accuracy until the archaeological discoveries of the C19. It names walls, gates and buildings, also discussed in the text, and was also the first map to chart the location of the 14 Stations of the Cross. Inspired by ancient historiographic works like Eusebius's 'Chronicon', the second part provides a chronology of world history shaped by the succession of empires and popes, from Adam to Rudolph II of Habsburg and Sixtus V. A masterpiece of Renaissance antiquarian culture. Gaspar Gyrod was professor of theology at the Seminary of St Joseph in Lyon, where this copy was preserved. BL STC Ger. C17, A165. Hardcover. Condition: g+. Second edition. Folio. [12], 286, [30], plus foldout maps. 3/4 calf over paper covered boards with gold lettering on spine; professionally rebacked with raised bands and brown leather title plate. Engraved title-page with images of Moses, Joshua, the Ark of the Covenant being carried through the Jordan river, and Mother Church with a cross. Decorative initials and head and tail pieces. Fascinating second edition of this scarce Biblical atlas, profusely illustrated with 12 folding &/or double-page engraved maps (including a large 2-sheet map of the Holy Land, a large 2-sheet plan of Jerusalem, and 10 maps showing the territories of the Tribes of Israel) by the 16th century German Catholic priest Christian van Adrichem. Adrichem goes alphabetically through the 13 tribes of Israel, listing the locations of the cities within their territory. Also printed together in this volume is Adrichem's "Urbis Hierosolymae," an alphabetical listing of 270 landmarks in Jerusalem plus an extra 37 miscellaneous places, and his "Chronicon Duplex," which gives an historical timeline from creation to the year 1585 and a brief year by year history from creation to death of St. John the Evangelist in 109 C.E. Adrichem ends the book with a description of Antichrist, based on Adso's Life of Antichrist. Dedicatory introduction to the pope by Geradus Brunius, who helped publish the book. Brunius laments the fact that, in the "ocean of Germany," he is surrounded by the "artifices of Satan," (Protestants) arrayed against the Catholic. Prefaces by Adrichem for each part and a laudatory poem by Jordan Louffii. The printer, Arnold Birkmann, came from a prominent printing family active in Cologne throughout the 16th century, and which played a leading role in the German Counter-Reformation movement. While Protestants are usually given the bulk of the credit for early modern biblical scholarship, this is an example of Catholic biblical scholarship formulated as part of a polemic against Protestantism. Christian van Adrichem's professional training as surveyor and his exhaustive studies of the Bible, the writings of Josephus, and early pilgrim narratives enabled him to produce these most influential Holy Land maps of the sixteenth century without ever having visited the region. Text is in Latin. Boards slightly rubbed. Contemporary inscription on title-page. Heavy age-toning to the first four leaves (however, leaving the text fully and easily readable). Clear water-staining at upper corner of last pages (not affecting text). Several map tears professionally repaired. Binding and interior in overall good+ condition.
