Elsa Gullberg (1886-1984) is celebrated as an intellectual with artistic talent. Though she was a prolific artist, she was also a producer and theoretician. Because she was a self-made success, Gullberg is regarded with great respect as one of the strongest women in the 20th century. This book includes essays about her childhood, life, her innovative textile work including materials, colors, patterns, and techniques employed, as well as an explanation regarding both the domestic and international response to her work. Following these essays, the comprehensive illustrated catalog of 176 entries has sections devoted to her Swedish handicrafts from 1907-17, furnishings from the 1920s, embroidery, rugs, pictorial weavings, tablecloths, woven textiles, and printed textiles - a great modernist., Swedish, Year1989, Illust. The epitome of modern design of the highest caliber, this is Karin Bj÷rquist. Her impressive career before, during and after Gustavsberg includes collaborating with Vilhelm K?ge, winning the Lunning Prize, and holding commissions for Nordiska KompanietÆs exhibition and the NK exhibition both in 1957. Her noteworthy repertoire includes Danish inspired functional stoneware as well as many dinnerware patterns, still in production today. They are known for their superb functional simplicity and for their perfect shape and size. KarinÆs blue speckled design for fireplaces and industrial installations are typical of her monumental work from the 60Æs and the 70Æs at which time she started to experiment in her studio creating wonderful rich glazes and characteristic functional ware. In the 90Æs she has created unique designs for the Pro Arte collection for R÷rstrand; needless to say KarinÆs accomplishments have greatly impacted the history of Swedish design., Swedish/ English captions and summary, Year1995, Illust.
