C' est en 1868, à 21 ans, qu'Emile Javelle, ce Français né à St-Etienne, vint s' établir à Vevey comme maître de français dans un pensionnat de jeunes gens . Dès ce moment, les Alpes exercèrent sur lui une véritable fascination. La Dent du Midi d' abord, qu' il avait chaque jour devant les yeux. En 1870 il gravit le Cervin avec un seul guide, un exploit. Puis viennent, en moins de dix ans, tous les grands pics valaisans: Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Dent Blanche, Rimpfischhorn, Mont Rose, Dent d' Hérens, le redoutable Morning Pass, la Grivola et le Grand Paradis et enfin la traversée du Mont Blanc, de Courmayeur à Chamonix, avec un de ses élèves âgé de 15 ans. Le principal mérite de Javelle est d' avoir découvert et révélé aux alpinistes le massif du Trient, absolument inconnu d' eux jusqu' en 1872. Javelle considérait la Suisse comme sa seconde patrie; ses amis de Lausanne et de Vevey ne voyaient pas du tout en lui un étranger. Il n' y eut aucune objection à sa nomination de président de la section des Diablerets pour les années 1874-1875, et plus tard de la section Jaman. (Extrait d'un texte de Louis Seylaz).
