Etching on cream laid paper, 6 3/4 x 10 3/4 (172 x 273 mm); sheet 7 1/4 x 11 inches (185 x 280 mm), margins. In good condition with some minor skinning, toning and areas of light discoloration on the verso. All condition issues are consistent with age. Plate No. 10 from Twelve Landscapes. [Bartsch 93]. This landscape belongs to a suite of twelve landscape etchings featuring Roman ruins that the artist himself published. It features a monumental ruin, perhaps inspired by the Baths of Caracalla, but placed in a more bucolic setting. Van Swanevelt's handling of the etching needle is particularly lively. A rich play of light pervades the image: dark foreground shadows, sun-drenched walls, others in half light, and beautifully rendered atmospheric perspective in the sky and background.

Etching on cream laid paper, 6 3/4 x 10 3/4 (172 x 273 mm), the full sheet, thread margins (trimmed at the platemark). In good condition with some minor skinning, toning and areas of light discoloration on the verso. All condition issues are consistent with age. Plate No. 1 from Twelve Landscapes. [Bartsch 83]. Landscape with a Cardinal belongs to a suite of twelve landscape etchings featuring Roman ruins that the artist himself published. It features a monumental ruin, perhaps inspired by the Baths of Caracalla, but placed in a more bucolic setting. The title derives from a small, robed staffage figure with a broad-brimmed hat in the foreground, one of five men seen walking along a road and about to encounter a seated beggar. Van Swanevelt's handling of the etching needle is particularly lively. A rich play of light pervades the image: dark foreground shadows, sun-drenched walls, others in half light, and beautifully rendered atmospheric perspective in the background. The whole is evocative of a beautiful day's walk in the countryside. This is a very early impression of the first edition of the etching. -Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Two with the name of the publisher: Paris, Mondhare.Swanevelt was a Dutch painter, etcher and draughtsman who worked mainly in Paris and Rome. His works were often landscapes that included religious and mythological themes. Painting at a time when the praise of landscapes grew, along with contemporary landscape artists such as Claude Lorrain (1600 - 1682), Swanevelt's style became popular in Italy. No doubt influenced by Lorrain's accomplishments at the time, Swanevelt also absorbed the landscape style of his fellow countryman visiting Italy, Cornelius van Poelenburgh (1590 - 1667).The painter's first documented works included two Views of Paris from 1623 during his time there and made his way to Rome in 1629, where he found much success. He received prominent patrons there including the noble Barberini Family, of who at the time was Maffeo Barberini, better known as Pope Urban VII (1568 - 1644). This also led to commissions from the Vatican itself, furthering Swanevelt's popularity in Rome. His works were also brought to Spain on commission from King Philip IV (1605 - 1665) for his Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. He also returned to France, where his patrons were Cardinal-Duc de Richelieu (1585 - 1642) and King Louis XIV (1638 - 1715), additional to painting decorations for the Hôtel Lambert in Paris. He settled there in Paris, becoming a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and sometimes traveling to his birthplace of Woerden in the Netherlands.
