This copy belonged to Max Caflisch, with his ownership inscription in pen on the front free endpaper. Spine of the jacket lightly faded and rubbed, else a fine copy. "contains a selection of the best work created by eminent European type designers." The back contains a table describing 80 types along with information about the founder, designer, and much else of interest.

This copy carries the bookplate, signature and gift inscription of Stewart Valdar of Hampstead. Valdar (1917-2007), a Communist (later Labour) Party member and journalist, he edited the Hampstead News and the Marylebone Record as well as a sub-editor on the Daily Herald and Sunday Times. In his political campaigning, he never sought high office, preferring to be "a foot soldier of the revolution". An important selection of types by eminent European type designers, collected together by Swiss typographer Rudolf Hostettler. It shows book faces, title faces, and with a table of origin of the types. Condition: Quite a scarce first edition, but this copy in fair condition only. The binding is rubbed and bumped to the spine, with some peeling way at the joints. Covers marked, corners bumped. Foxing to endpapers (front and rear), the main body of text in much better condition but pages 61-64 with some red ink spills (remaining readable).

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. St Gallen, for the author. 8vo, 34 p., original stapled wraps. First and only edition of this tribute to the typographer who apprenticed at Hell printing. Illustrated throughout. Light crimping and tanning along spine joint, else NF. OCLC locates three copies.

Contains many black-and-white plates throughout. This issue focuses on 'Virtue', or 'Tugend' in German. Corners at fore edge show light light bumping. Otherwise Very Good in solid binding.

This a very good copy of this small book in black boards, the third edition from 1959, originally published in German this is a later edition with English, French, Italian and Dutch translations of the printing terms. Nice tight copy with no significant marks, very light rubbing and yellowing to pages but overall very good, almost fine. JH.
