Light foxing top fore-edge. There is light tanning to light blue cloth at head / heel of spine. A good, clean reading copy free of markings. This copy is smyth sewn. Smyth sewing is a method of book binding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

The author gives some of the answers to these questions by telling the story of one of Britain's 'modern' executioners, James Berry, who hanged some 200 men and women (his first execution was a double carried out in March 1884, two men named Innes and Vickers). Berry was the first hangman to be really literate with the attitude that there was nothing peculiar in his occupation. His experiences over a number of years, and especially in hanging women, eventually unnerved him.
