Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Printed in England. Second Edition, stated on the title page. Prefaces to the First and Second Editions, Bibliography, Notes, Appendix; vii, 171 pages. The original 1827 textblock has been rebound in attractive dark-brown pebbled cloth which has the appearance of leather and remains in excellent condition; the endpapers are a crisp white. The original interior leaves are supple and very good overall. However, age discoloration on the half-title carries over to the title page and even to the first preface; thereafter, the leaves are much brighter, and unmarked, with only several peppercorn-sized spots on the last few leaves. [Please see the multiple images of this book.] Two corners are turned down; two leaves protrude ever-so-slightly but are firmly bound in. On the half-title, in pencil, is the attractive signature of H. Gollancz, president of England's Jewish Historical Society, 1905-1906; his name is also stamped (Hermann Gollancz) on the title page. [Again, see images.] "To no German prose writer can the [phrase] 'Honey flowed from the speaker's lips,' as Homer says of Nestor, so justly be applied as to our philosopher. Never have the mind and the heart been so jointly implicated and interested; never did truth and beauty walk so consistently and amiably together. He convinces the mind while he affects the heart. . . ." (page 30) Short biographies of Thomas Abbt, Christopher Frederic Nicholai, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, and Johann Casper Lavater are given in the Appendix. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. First Edition
Cfr. Giovanna Federici Airoldi in Diz. Bompiani d.

Libraries worldwide that own item: 2. The 4th scan, of the binding, has easily removable candle wax drippings. Two centuries ago people often read by candlelight, so it's a nice touch to leave it on the board. And it's not accidental that the wax is on the right side of the binding. One always lays down the book, especially a bible, so the "front" is on top. There may be a variant with an additional illustrated title page and a portrait. Vinograd, Vienna 491.
