Bartolomeo Ricci da Lugo was born in 1490 and died in 1569 in Ferrara, Italy, so this volume was published in his lifetime. He was mentor to Prince Alfonso d'Este and left several speeches and letters, together with a famous treatise on the stylistic imitation of the Latin classics, known as the 'Apparatus'. This book offered readers a tool to refine their knowledge of Latin, using exclusively classical examples and it was published following the favourable judgement of Pietro Bembo, the theorist of modern Italian. Both Bembo and Ricci thought that the purest Latin prose should imitate the style of Cicero, as closely as possible. Testo in latino in elegante carattere corsivo. XVIII century full vellum with nails and with gilt decoration on the spine; blue edges; ex-libris eldquo;Aldina Collection by Stelio Valentinierdquo; 88 numbered leaves including the title page with Aldine anchor (i.e. 87 by mistake on leaf 88 which is instead 87) -1 final unnumbered leaf with colophon on the recto and Aldine anchor on the back. First Edition (?) of this treatise on literary imitation. Renuard (122:3) cites an edition of 1541, but there is no trace of any copy in any library in the world as attested by the USTC records, Worldcate Edit 16. Bartolomeo Ricci was an important humanist from Ferrara, a famous Latinist and for having published a Latin dictionary and a treatise on diction read and appreciated by Erasmus and Bembo. Copy in good condition, slight browning.
