Equipment difficulties doomed the mission and he and his crew of two disappeared after two days after the balloon crashed on the ice. They attempted to In 1930 their last camp, diaries and bodies were discovered and their fate became clear. This book, published in the same year of their discovery utilizes their diaries and photographs in telling their story. This is the Blue Ribbon Books "Boys Edition." Contains end paper maps of their flight and attempted walk back to safety. Original pictorial hard cover binding. A little age spotting to the end papers and the pages are very lightly age toned, else this is a clean, tight copy with no owner's name and no internal or external markings. This is the story of Swedish polar explorer Andrée and his tragic expedition on board of the hydrogen balloon called "Ornen2 (Eagle). The book is based on documents found by the crew of the ship known as "Bratvaag" which, during a trip dedicated to scientific research towards Franz Josef Land, found the spoils of the Andrée Expedition on the deserted island of "Kvitoya" (White Island). 33 years earlier Andrée's balloon had disappeared without leaving any apparent trace.

A total of nine test flights were made in the balloon Svea led by Salomon August Andrée, the renowned Swedish engineer and aeronaut. The test flights preceded the unsuccessful expedition headed for the North Pole in the balloon Örnen in 1897. The fate of the expedition was unknown for 33 years until a Norwegian ship discovered remains at Kvitøya (White Island) in 1930. This collection includes observations made during six of the balloon test flights. They were carried out in August and October 1893, February, April and July 1894 and in March 1895.
