First Edition
[Gall, Franz Joseph (1758-1828).] Stuart, Martinus (1765-1826). Folding plate. Amsterdam: J. W. IJntema, 1806. 225 x 136 mm. (uncut). 19th-century marbled paper wrappers, a bit chipped. Edges a bit frayed, light soiling to title but very good. First Edition. Stuart, a Dutch pastor and historian, was one of the strongest advocates in Holland of Gall's theory of localized brain function. Despite his theological background, Stuart "supported Gall in every way, with both regard to his explanation of brain anatomy and physiology and to his views on the relationship between the shape of the brain and the development of the skull. Remarkably he accepted Gall's materialism and rejected his fatalism" (Heiningen, p. 113). Gall first visited Holland in April 1806, where he gave lectures on his system of brain function; afterwards Stuart published his "reminiscences" (Herinneringen) of Gall's lectures in the present work. T. Heiningen, "The reception of Franz Joseph Gall's doctrine on phrenology in Holland shortly after 1800" [abstract], Gewina 20 [1997]: 113-28. .

Condition: Fair. 6 volumes.Fairly worn with damaged spines, and some loose boards. bright colour illustrations.
2 volumes. First edition of a travel book on North America by Martinus Cohen Stuart (1824-1878). Cohen Stuart, a prominent minister of the Remonstrant Church, visited the United States in 1875 at the invitation of the Evangelical Alliance, an international Protestant missionary society. With contagious enthusiasm he gives a very positive depiction of American society. He praises the United States for its democratic foundations and the advancing ecclesiastical and social state of affairs. In vivid imagery, interspersed with lithographed plates and small wood-engraved illustrations, he expresses his interests in its people, cities and countryside. In describing the cities, public buildings and places of interest especially, he shows himself a keen observer, though he does not neglect to stress their historic Dutch roots. The plates are by the leading lithographers Emerik and Binger in Haarlem, and the wood-engravings finely executed by Édouard Vermorcken (1820-1906) of Antwerp and Brussels. Binding worn, front hinge of the first volume damaged at the top. Slightly browned throughout with some occasional stains. Otherwise a good copy.l Tiele, Bibl. 1064; not in Eberstadt; Sabin. Contemporary half brown roan (sheepskin). With 10 tinted lithograph plates by "Emrik & Binger", and 27 wood-engraved illustrations by Édouard Vermorcken in text. Pages: 8, 366; [8], 332 pp.

Binding edges partly heavily scuffed, corners bumped (cover paper burst there), spine brightened and first volume with small tear at top (approx. 1 cm), ex-libris, endpapers shaded by bookbinder glue, the formerly folded copper plates partly with fold marks and in the white margin partly with holes due to the former binding, very few plates a bit loosened, some plates slightly foxed, mainly concerning the white margin, folds resp. margins of 5 plates and 2 title pages with tears, usually cleanly privately backed with regular paper of the time or professionally backed with tissue paper (with two exceptions tears without entering the image, the largest tear protrudes approx. 4 cm along the image margin into the image, but hardly noticeable in the image itself due to the meticulous repair), small loss in the white margin of the plate "Overtogt van de brug te Lodi, den 11den Meij 1796" backed with paper, ca. pinhead-sized loss in the portrait of Claviere.
