Books condition - near Very Good ; contents clean, no inscriptions, no foxing, no creasing, binding firm ; pale-grey card covers with title on the front and spine ; edges and corners somewhat creased and a bit soiled, backs slightly dusty but with no real marks, spines darkened but the titles remain clear, spine of volume 1 has some loss in the bottom 3-4 cm, fronts are dusty and show some tanning around the perimeters Please see photos for indications of contents and condition. A detailed scientific study with keys for Aspidiotini, Onaspidini, Parlatorini and the Selenaspidus complex, and covering all of Africa south of about the Tropic of Cancer ( excludes Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt ). The main author, Alfred Balachowsky ( 1901-1983) was a French entomologist born in Russia, who specialised in Coccoidea but also wrote on Coleoptera, and became president of the Societe Entomologique de France in 1948. (He was also part of a spy network in Paris run by the British SOE in WWII - see Wikipedia for an informative summary of his wartime experiences). Mesnil to volume one, "A mon ami le Dr. van Emden". Alfred Serge Balachowsky (1901-1983) was born in Russia but spent most of his life in France. He was a pioneer of biological pest control. Félix Étienne Pierre Mesnil (1868-1938) was a French Biologist. Together they complied the first comprehensive reference work on insect pests in France. It became the standard reference for agronomists, farmers, and plant-health officials for decades. Volume 1 covers pests of fruit trees, vines, cereals and forages; volume 2 covers pests of vegetables, industrial crops, ornamentals, grains, stored products, and includes notes on insecticides. The work is illustrated with over 1,300 photographs and fine line drawings.The work was issued in two formats. 750 sets were printed on Helio Navarre paper, a high-quality ivory-finish paper, this copy is stamped no. 119.
