Die Schreie, die die Urmenschen bei ihren Arbeitsanstrengungen unwillkürlich ausstießen - die Arbeitsschreie - waren die Embryonen der Worte, die ersten Bezeichnungen: als natürliche und für alle verständliche Wiedergabe der Handlungen, bei denen sie entstanden find. Und dieselben Arbeitsschreie wurden die Keime der Arbeitslieder. Sie waren nicht eine einfache Unterhaltung oder Zerstreuung. In gemeinsamen Arbeiten hatten sie die Anstrengungen der Arbeitenden geeinigt, verliehen ihnen Harmonie, rhythmische Regelmäßigkeit und Bündigkeit. Sie waren infolgedessen ein Mittel zur Organisation der kollektiven Anstrengungen. Dieselbe Bedeutung behalten sie auch jetzt noch. In den Schlachtliedern, die sich später entwickelten, tritt die organisatorische Bedeutung mit einer anderen Schattierung auf. Sie wurden meistens vor der Schlacht gesungen und bereiteten für sie eine einige Stimmung, ein Band des kollektiven Gefühls, das Fundament einer einmütigen, ebenmäßigen Handlung im Kampfe.
