METCALFE, A.E. Woman's Effort: A Chronicle of British Women's Fifty Years' Struggle for Citizenship (1865-1914). Oxford: B.H. Blackwell, 1917. Frontispiece and 6 illustrated plates. Woman's Effort is a history of the struggle for political citizenship, as told by Agnes Edith Metcalfe. She gives a granular history of the parliamentary actions as well as popular organizing that the British women's movement trenchantly and steadfastly carried out over this time period. She also covers militant flashpoints such as the bombing and arson campaign carried out by foundational group, the Women's Social and Political Union. Metcalfe's partisanship is clear but does not cloud the narrative, and lends itself well to a thorough analysis of an important social formation. Original green cloth boards, spine minorly sunned. Free endpaper has some minor foxing but the interior is clean and illustrations bright. A fascinating work that can be considered part history, part schematic for those who seek to make change. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time.

Add to basketFirst edition. 24 pages of titles, Preface, Introduction and Contents, then 381 pages + 3 of ads, an illustrated frontispiece and a further 6 black and white illustrated plates. Publisher's review copy, stamped as such to the title page, the reviewer was militant suffragette, W.S.P.U. member and fellow author, Evelyn Sharp, with her ownership inscription in ink to the front endpaper dated 1917, and passages to the text highlighted in pencil. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's green cloth, lettered in faded white to the spine, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, the spine is sunned and the extremities are bumped. The text block is age toned, slightly marked and dusty, with a few dog-eared page corners and slight cracking at points. The first of three works by Metcalfe, herself an active suffragist, on the question of women's suffrage, this a history which becomes increasingly detailed during the period of which Metcalfe has first-hand knowledge, with particular emphasis on the activities of the militant suffragettes. This, a superb association copy, originally owned by one of the more famous suffragettes.
