Of particular importance was the widespread uplift and emergence of large section of the North Atlantic Margin during Cenozoic time, a process that included major denudational episodes in the Paleocene and Late Neogene. Despite a rapid increase in the understanding of this phenomenon, there are still many critical questions: the relative intensity of the various exhumation phases and their geographical variation; mechanisms of uplift; nature of the link between onshore denudation and offshore sedimentation. Testo su due colonne arricchito da magnifiche decorazioni xilografiche verticali di Enrico Giacomelli. Con 120 + 110 bellissime tavole fuori testo a piena pagina incise finemente da vari artisti su disegni di Gustave Doré. Legatura coeva in mezza percallina verde con titoli e fregi in oro ai dorsi, piatti in carta marmorizzata (lievi spellature e mancanze). Leggere bruniture alle carte iniziali e finali dei volumi, sporadiche e naturali fioriture, peraltro esemplare nel complesso ben conservato.Monumentale edizione illustrata da Gustave Doré (verosimilmente seconda tiratura della prima edizione italiana con entrambe i volumi datati 1870) della classica traduzione biblica di Antonio Martini. La versione di quest'ultimo fu condotta sulla base del testo greco dei Settanta e per i raffronti con le lingue semitiche originarie l'autore si avvalse della consulenza del rabbino di Firenze, Levi. Le illustrazioni bibliche di Doré apparvero per la prima volta in Francia nel 1865. Destinate ad enorme fortuna, e tra i vertici della sua attività di incisore, influenzarono profondamente anche la percezione visiva di registi cinematografici come David W. Griffith e Cecil B.
