Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. One of 500 copies printed by the Greenwood Press. Original publisher's brown paper-covered boards backed with green cloth. Brown paper spine label with black lettering. Front and back covers have a 3 x 4 grid pattern printed in black ink which shows a repeating motif illustration of an Indigenous warrior. 6 3/4" x 10." 149 pages, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for a few spots of rubbing, slight wear to extremities, and possible age toning to spine label. A Near Fine copy. An entertaining and informative autobiographical account by Friedrich Gerstaecker (also, Gerstacker; 1816-1872), a German world traveler and author. Gerstaecker worked a number of odd jobs as a young adult before he found a successful career as a travel writer. He became well-known for his writings that documented his travels around the world including his journeys to the United States, the American West, South America, Mexico, the West Indies, Hawai'i, Polynesia, and Australia. This particular book documents his travels in California and Honolulu, Hawai'i. He provides many detailed observations and impressions of the people he meets and locales he visits. Notably, this account includes his recollection of working as a gold miner in California and focuses on California gold mining in general. Chapter titles: "San Francisco in the Autumn of 1849," "A Trip to the Gold Mines," "Sacramento City," "Mission Dolores," "The Mines and the People in Them," "The Indians of California," "Life and Character in the Mines," "The Musquito Gulch and Magualome," "San Francisco in the Autumn of 1850," "From San Francisco to Honolulu," and "Honolulu."
