Endpaper maps, black and white photographic illustrations, 107pp, blue cloth covered boards, trifle worn, lettering on spine barely visible, head and tail of spine worn, endpapers lightly browned, but the text is good and clean. "George Hunter has become a legendary figure, so closely and for so long has he been associated with…Central Asia. He became part of it, and the Central Asian picture would be incomplete without him.He was one of the last great pioneer missionaries. It is regrettable that he has not passed on more of the accumulated knowledge which he possessed but his is the honour which he most coveted, not the M.B.E. which the king was graciously pleased to grant him, but that of being a translator of the Scriptures into the language of some remote tribes who otherwise would not yet have had them." - Dustjacket blurb.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the inspiring story of Pastor Hsi, a remarkable Confucian scholar who converted to Christianity and dedicated his life to spreading the gospel in Hwochow, China. The author paints a vivid picture of the challenges and triumphs faced by early missionaries in this region,… including the opium crisis and the Boxer Rebellion. The narrative delves into the cultural intricacies of Chinese village life, highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of the people while also acknowledging the hardships they endured. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics between missionaries and the communities they served, as well as the profound impact of faith on individual lives and societal transformation. Contact seller5-star sellerNew Popular Edition. Octavo. xv, 304. 7.5" x 5" A detailed account of three bold women's missionary journey through Asia in the early twentieth century. Mildred Cable and Francesca French, along with Francesca's older sister Evangeline (Eva), were British missionaries in China. Known as the "Trio," these three women traveled thr…oughout China and Central Asia, working for the China Inland Mission (CIM). In their thirty-some years far from home, the women faced multiple challenges, but as J. Stuart Holden, also a member of CIM, writes in the introduction, "They make light of the difficulties, for the joy of service sustained them and love lent wings to feet that were often weary enough" (x). Indeed, their joy is palpable in how they write about the lovely people they meet, the fascinating places they see, and the trials that were merely part of the adventure. This near fine copy, signed by each member of the Trio, includes a frontispiece of the three women with Topsy, their adopted Chinese daughter, as well as a fold-out map of Sinkiang (Chinese Turkestan). Three small spots to front board, minor rubbing to rear board. Foxing to text block fore edge and moderately throughout. Faint residue mark on front fly. One word underlined in blue pen on page 158, creasing to last two signatures due to map. Closed tear to map, previous tape repairs. Overall near fine, tight copy. Rebound in orange-brown morocco with patterned endpapers. Gilt title and decorations on spine. Top and bottom edge stained pale orange. With a frontispiece and map. (illustrator).
