Contemporary quarter calf over paper-covered boards, raised bands, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine. Moderate rubbing and scuffing to boards, heavier rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, boards beginning to separate, but secure. Copperplate frontispiece with architectural border, woodcut image of author to verso. Moderate toning and light foxing to interior, faint dampstaining to foot of text block in a few places. Partially struck-through name ("Gavroux"?) to title page, check marks, underlining and annotations to several leaves, a few somewhat illegible, in somewhat later hand. $3,500. * Later edition. Andre Tiraqueau, a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris from 1541, was an authority on civil law and a leading legal humanist. First published in 1543, De Utroque Retractu is a comparative work on the civil law and the customary law of Poitou. A well-received work, it went through several later editions and issues into the seventeenth century. Based on the handwriting style and content, our copy appears to have been annotated in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth centuries. Several notes relate to inheritance and succession. Others indicate penalties (p. 86) and prohibitions of alienation of the goods of others (p. 200). Throughout, the annotator quotes judgments of the Parliament and does not, in several places, hesitate to contradict Tiraqueau. Baudrier, Bibliographie Lyonnaise IX:311. Lyon: Apud Guliel.
