"Flatland" by A Square (Reverend Doctor Edwin A. Abbott) 1939 Antique Hardcover Book with Dust Jacket 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" 155 Pages The jacket is in good to good minus condition with edge chips, stains and has been price clipped. The spine has toned. The jacket is protected with a removable Mylar cover. The book is in good condition, free from rips, tears, writing, and bends. There is a small stain on the bottom page edges and the previous address label which has been partially removed on the front free end page. The boards are in good with light to minimal wear. The binding is tight and square. The narrator, a Square, dreams of a one-dimensional world (Lineland) and is later visited by a sphere from three-dimensional Space, who tries to explain higher dimensions, but the Square is seen as a madman for his ideas.

Third edition of Abbott's satirical novella and an early example of experimental science fiction. The book uses the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to satirise the class and gender hierarchies of Victorian society, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. The first two editions of Flatland were published in rapid succession in 1884, after which the work went out of print. Blackwell brought it back with this third edition in 1926, forty-two years later. Although the text includes a small number of revisions from the second edition, the book's physical presentation is nearly identical to the earlier editions. Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1926. Publisher's original illustrated wraps; pp. xvi, 102. An about very good copy. Wear and toning to wraps with a minor stain to front wrap and text block edge. Front hinge a touch overopened, small owner's inscription to half-title else internally clean. Uncommon.

Original pictorial (map of Flatland) buff self-jacketed wrappers, soiled on front cover and badly waterstained on rear (not affecting contents; spine leaning. Protected by a transparent plastic cover. The first two editions of Flatland appeared in quick succession in 1884 but the book then fell out of print. Blackwell issued this third edition forty two years later. Textually it is has a few revisions from the second edition but its appearance is almost exactly the same as the earlier ones. It contains the celebrated preface from the second edition in which Abbott defended himself from criticisms aimed at the first edition. It also has an introduction by the physicist William Garnett who was a pupil of Abbott's at The City of London School.
