Hardcover. Condition: Good. A remarkable association copy. Three volumes in original full leather bindings. Brown calf, much dried and cracked, but all boards still firmly attached by cords. Leather cracked at hinges, scuffed at the edges. Black leather title labels chipped. But text blocks remain very tight and square and crisp. They remain attractive on the shelf. This is the FIFTH edition of this set, with General Index. No date on the title pages. Volume 1 has 477 pages. Volume 2 has 468 pages. Volume 3 has 384 pages + long index and booksellers ad. All three volumes have early ownership bookplates on the inside front covers. Centered on the inside cover on all three volumes is a small bookplate with the name "Emily Gage" with double line border. Emily Gage was the daughter of General Thomas Gage, commander of British Forces in the American Colonies at the start of the Revolutionary War. She married Montagu Bertie, the 5th Earl of Abingdon. Beneath her bookplate, each volume has a large armorial bookplate with the title "The Right Honble Montagu Earl of Abingdon, Baron Norreys of Rycott" -- which is either her husband or son (both had the same name). Emily Gage died in 1838, so it's clear that the books were published before then. The eighth edition of this set was published in 1814, so this predates that, as well.
