Die mit vergleichender Wertung erfolgende Untersuchung der Entwicklung von Raumart und -folge hat das Ziel, die Bedeutung des bisher als technische Sicherungsmaßnahme verstandenen Schachtes nach dem 3. Korridor zu ermitteln. Unter Berücksichtigung von Architektur, Raumdekorationen und Inschriften zeigt Abitz, dass der sogenannte Grabräuberschacht nicht die zuvor angenommene Aufgabe hatte, die königliche Mumie und die Schätze der Grabausstattung zu schützen, sondern dass ihm vielmehr eine religiöse Bedeutung innerhalb der Jenseitsvorstellungen zukam.
