Great Driffield, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, has had a military aerodrome as a near neighbour since the establishment of a RFC training station in WWI. The site was dismantled in the 1920s and then redeveloped under the RAF expansion the mid 1930s. During the early days of WWII bomber squadrons in No 4 (Bomber) Group operated from RAF Driffield. The airfield was badly damaged when subjected to several Luftwaffe bombing raids. Aftre repairs a short period was spent in Fighter Command. In 1943 Driffield was developed into a four-engined bomber base for Halifax equipped squadrons. Following WWII it moved into the jet age, becoming a jet fighter training unit, home to jet fighter squadrons, and finally the Wing Headquarters and base of Thor missiles until closure in 1963.…
