First edition of this classic travel narrative by Abraham Golnitz, describing journeys through the Spanish Netherlands, France, Savoy, and Piedmont during the height of early 17th-century political and religious upheaval. Printed by the renowned Elzevier press in Leiden, whose small-format publications of history, science, and literature are today among the most prized works of the Dutch Golden Age of printing. The elaborate engraved title, signed by Cornelis Galle II, depicts Mercury and a traveller flanking an allegorical coat of arms, emphasizing the bookâs theme of learned and cosmopolitan travel. This copy bears an early ownership inscription of âDuhan de Rostaingâ, together with a Latin moral aphorism: âLex universalis est, nemini faciendum quod pati non visâ (The universal law is: do not do to others what you do not wish to suffer yourself). Such provenance enriches the bookâs intellectual history.
