Egresó como bachiller en el actual Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires (CNBA). Sus padres eran inmigrantes alemanes que la alentaban a estudiar y escribir. Fue precisamente su madre, Elena Schwarz de Elflein, quien aprovechó sus contactos como institutriz de familias ricas porteñas para presentar los relatos de su hija en el diario La Prensa de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. En esa época, La Prensa era un medio importante y moderno. En 1905, la llamaron para presentar sus títulos y, entre ellos, acercó un certificado de traductora escrito de puño y letra por Bartolomé Mitre, para quien había hecho traducciones del alemán.
