Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Steele-Perkins, Chris - Photography (illustrator). 127 Pages. Original French Edition published by Marval, Paris in 2000. This the Westzone First Printing of the 2001 English Edition. Black hard boards with white titles on spine. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper it is a hardback book with a pictorial dust jacket that was removed from shrink wrap and posted on line. Never opened. This is a documentary book of black and white photographs most in full page. All of the photographs are reproduced in miniature and appended at the end with captions. This book is introduced by the French essayist and traveller André Velter and includes essays and verses by the Afghani poet Sayd Bahodine Majrouh, who was assassinated in Pakistan in 1988. Illustrated by 76 duotone photographs. Chris Steele-Perkins visited Afghanistan numerous times over a five year period. Throughout those years, the country was devastated by a succession of wars, as it still is today. Steele-Perkins is hopeful and as a result, the photographs are unforgettable rather than sensationalistic. He seeks to capture the continuing cycles of everyday life despite the fact of war, resulting in a collection of images of wonder and violence, terror and joy. Steele-Perkins is one of the world's foremost photojournalists.

The dust jacket shows minor wear marks, edge wear, scuffs and scratches. Interior with minor signs of wear.; From the 1860s through to the 1890s the rise of Japonisme and the Art Nouveau movement meant few could resist the obsession with all things Japanese. Superbly crafted and often highly decorated Japanese objects - lacquer, metalwork, ceramics, enamels and other decorative items rich in new and exotic subject matter - stimulated and inspired Western artists and craftsmen to produce their own works. Arts of the Meiji period (1868-1912) were displayed at international exhibitions, in the galleries of influential dealers and at fashionable stores in London, Paris and Vienna. Artists from Van Gogh, Whistler, Monet and Manet to Klimt and Schiele were all, to varying degrees, influenced by the arts of Japan. Van Gogh himself stated that he owed his inspiration to Japanese art, but he was probably not conscious of the full extent to which art in Europe had already been greatly influenced by that of Japan. Here, six renowned scholars and specialists examine the wider influence of Japanese art and design in Europe with superlative examples from the Khalili Collection, the world's finest collection of works from the Meiji period. They demonstrate that the Japanese influence on modern Western art has been far more penetrating than has been widely recognized.
