Written by German mod…ernist architects Heinz and Bodo Rasch, "Wie bauen ?" (How to Build?) is a monograph on the construction and furnishing of the Weißenhofsiedlung, one of the most significant architectural exhibitions of the 20th century. Held in Stuttgart in 1927, the exhibition brought together for the first time some of the most influential and progressive European designers from the early decades of the century. The central feature of the event was a development of 21 domestic buildings located on the Weißenhof hillside overlooking the city, which was visited by over 500,000 people during the summer of 1927. Lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w photographic reproductions, architectural drawings and floor plans, this book is divided into an introductory part and two main parts: - The introductory part of this work contains a plan of the Weißenhof settlement, as well as a maquette, and photographs of its construction. - The first part is devoted to the various techniques of wall construction applied to the Weißenhof settlement, and contains illustrations and b/w photographic reproductions of architectural projects, completed (and under construction) homes and buildings by Trappani, Mies van der Rohe (Berlin), Heinz and Bodo Rasch (Stuttgart), Josef Frank (Vienna), Ludwig Hilberseimer (Berlin), Adolf Schneck (Stuttgart), Mart Stam (Rotterdam), Peter Behrens (Berlin), Richard Döcker (Stuttgart), Ernst May (Frankfurt), J. J. P. Oud (Rotterdam), Frank Lloyd Wright (USA), Walter Gropius (Dessau), Max Berg (Berlin), and Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret (Paris). - The second and last part is devoted to framing in the construction of the Weißenhof settlement. It contains numerous b/w photographic reproductions of architectural projects, completed (and under construction) homes and buildings by Hans Poelzig (Berlin), Richard Döcker (Stuttgart), Mies van der Rohe (Berlin), Hans Scharoun (Breslau), Max Taut (Berlin), Adolf Rading (Breslau), Walter Gropius (Dessau), as well as furniture by Heinz and Bodo Rasch (Stuttgart), and Mies van der Rohe (Berlin). Wrappers rubbed and slightly creased along edges. Some foxing and age-toning to back cover.
