Er studierte in Jena und Berlin - u.a. bei Franz Reuleaux - Maschinenbau und Mathematik. Nach seinerPromotion erhielt Slaby eine Anstellung an der Gewerbeschule Potsdam. Bei seinen Studien zum Thema der Elektrotechnik wurde er maßgeblich von Werner von Siemens unterstützt. Slabys Vorlesungen behandelten Elektrische Kraftmaschinen und Elektromechanik. Im Jahre 1883 wurde er der erste ordentliche Professor für Elektrotechnik. Slaby war ein Pionier der Funktechnik, er unternahm etliche Telegraphie-Versuche und entwickelte ein System der drahtlosen Telegraphie. Mit Karl Ferdinand Braun gründete er den Vorläufer der Telefunken AG.
