Sheet Music
Vintage classical vocal sheet music issued as part of the Pathways of Song educational series edited by Frank La Forge and Will Earhart. Large-format edition for high and low voice with piano accompaniment, bilingual Italian/English text, and interpretive introduction regarding performance tempo and phrasing. Condition: Very Good. Complete and firmly bound with light general toning and mild edge wear. Small corner creases and minor handling wear to wrappers; no major tears or detached sections observed. Interior music pages remain clean and highly legible, with pencil performance markings and a contemporary ownership inscription on the first music page. Decorative modernist cover design with red circular motifs remains especially attractive and displayable. A solid example of late-1930s American classical vocal pedagogy publishing. 1938 Witmark issue from the Pathways of Song series; not a later reprint. Publisher imprint on rear wrapper: M. Witmark & Sons, RCA Building, New York 20, N.Y. George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was one of the Baroque era's greatest composers, celebrated for his operas, oratorios, and vocal works including Messiah. Atalanta, first performed in 1736, contains several lyrical arias that remained popular with vocal instructors and recital singers well into the twentieth century. Frank La Forge (1879-1953), a noted American accompanist and vocal editor, helped adapt and popularize European art songs for English-speaking performers.

First edition, third impression with '3' on copyright page. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (price on back jacket (£16.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 354pp, illustrated. This is a history of the King James Version of the Bible (known in Britain as the Authorised Version) over the four hundred years from its remote beginnings to the present day. Gordon Campbell, expert in Renaissance literatures, tells the fascinating and complex story of how this translation came to be commissioned, of who the translators were and of how the translation was accomplished. The story does not end with the printing of that first edition, but introduces the subsequent generations who edited and interacted with the text. The present text of the King James Version differs in thousands of small details from the original edition. Campbell traces the textual history from 1611 to the establishment of the modern text by Oxford University Press in 1769. Attitudes to the King James Version have shifted through time and territory, ranging from adulation to deprecation and attracting the attention of a wide variety of adherents. It is more widely read in America today than in any other country, and its particular history in there is given due attention. Generously illustrated with reproductions taken from early editions, this volume helps to explain the enduring popularity of the King James Version throughout the world today.

Very rare complete suite of among the most beautifully engraved Carribbean views of the 18th century. Engraved by Grignion after Campbell. 4) An East View of Fort Royal in the Island of Guadaloupe. Engraved by Peter Mazell after Campbell. Published following the conclusion of the French and Indian War, and in a period of great public interest in the American colonies, the Scenographia Americana was the first book dedicated to a large-scale artistic depiction of the American and West Indies landscape. From the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the West Indies, the scenes include locations of battles, views of strategic provincial capitals, and newly secured areas of commercial importance. Just as clear is the celebration of nature's 'astonishingly great' expanse, to cite Pownall, great in width and in height. Here are harbors and rivers, cascades, forests and skies" (Hood). In 1768, the plates were published in two forms, the complete set of 28 engraved plates (priced at four guineas); or as seven separate suites as follows: six views of Canada after Smith (plates 1-6, priced 1 guinea); two views in Canada (plates 7-8, priced 7s); two views of New York after Howdell (plates 9-10, priced 7s); two views of Boston and Charlestown, SC (plates 11-12, priced 7s, 6d for the pair or 3s, 6d individually); six views after Pownall (plates 13-18, priced 1 guinea); six views of Havana after Durnford (plates 19-24, priced 1 guinea); and four views in the West Indies after Campbell (plates 25-28, priced 14s) [as here]. In 1758, Archibald Campbell was commissioned into the Royal Engineers, serving in the Seven Years' War. Besides seeing action at the Siege of Quebec (in which he was wounded), he participated in a number of raids along the coast of France, as well as in expeditions in the West Indies, from which he based these views. He would later command a regiment in the American Revolution and become the colonial Governor of Jamaica. Engraving, by Peter Mazell. A fine and rare image of Guadaloupe in the West Indies, taken during the English occupation of the island from 1759 to 1763. Fort Royal is situated on the west coast of Basse-Terre (the more rugged of the two islands that make up the bulk of Guadaloupe) and is near the present-day town of Deshaies. The British attempted, unsuccessfully, to capture the French colony of Guadaloupe in 1666, 1691 and 1703, before finally succeeding in 1759. The island was returned to the French in 1763, but captured again, briefly, in April 1794.
