First edition of Valtin's bestselling autobiographical narrative. Octavo, original blue cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "For Ben Mandel, who helped. Jan Valtin November 1940." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket art by George Salter. A bestseller in 1941, described as". . . full of sensational revelations and interspersed with episodes of daring, of desperate conflict, of torture, and of ruthless conspiracy . . . It is, first of all, an autobiography the like of which has seldom been." The son of a seafaring father, Richard Julius Herman Krebs, a.k.a. Jan Valtin, came of age as a bicycle messenger during a maritime rebellion. His life as an intimate insider account of the dramatic events of 1920's and 1930s, where he rose both within the ranks of the Communist Party and on the Gestapo hit list. Known for his honesty and incredible memory, Krebs dedicated his life to the Communist Party, rising to a position as head of maritime, organizing worldwide for the Comintern, only to flee the Party and Europe to evade his own comrade's attempts to kill him. As a professional revolutionary, agitator, spy and would-be assassin, Krebs traveled the globe from Germany to China, India to Sierra Leon, Moscow to the United States where a botched assassination attempt landed him a stint in San Quentin. From his spellbinding account of artful deception to gain release from a Nazi prison and his work as a double-agent within the Gestapo, to his vivid depiction of a Communist Party fraught with intrigue and subterfuge, Krebs gives an unflinching portrayal of the internal machinations of both parties. Writing at age 36 under the name Jan Valtin, Krebs lays bare a young life filled with idealism and devotiondisillusionment and lossin a world full of revolutionary promise gone immeasurably wrong."An exciting, real book without a trace of unnecessary melodrama" (H.G.Wells).

[TOY BOOK] [ACTIVITY BOOK] [JUVENILE]. Folio (13" x 9 ½"); [8] leaves; color pictorial front wrapper showing the completed paper crèche, 2 crèche pieces printed on the rear wrapper; assembly directions printed on the verso front wrapper; 8 leaves printed with numbered and lettered shapes to be cut-out, a diagram of the completed scene is on the first leaf; fine. OCLC locates one copy at the Herder Institute in Germany. A later copy is located at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. An unused booklet of color-printed figures to cut-out and stand up to form a crèche in the style found in the early 19th century Czech town of P?íbram. The scene features a walled city on a hill with an angel soaring over the church dome. On the first level, a cave houses the Holy Family, and villagers head toward the manager with gifts. Sheep and goats graze on the hill and in front of the manger. Thirty-three numbered figures with self-stands to fold over are ready to be cut-out and placed around the village. First published in 1970, this is a reprint from 1990 by the same Prague publishing house, Albatros. Albatros was founded in 1949 and continues to be a publisher of children's and young adult books. The artist, Jan ?aka (1929-2018), was born in Prague but his family was from the town of P?íbram in the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. ?aka worked for a uranium mining company in P?íbram as a cartographer, but was involved in Scouting and was a lover of the Czech countryside and nature. He wrote several books but they were prevented from being published and were destroyed by the Communists. His interesting life can be explored on the English portion of the Czech website: poznejpribram dot cz/en.

A most stunning promotional map of the World published for the French chocolate company Menier, centred on the Pacific and outlining a route across the globe, starting and finishing in Paris. Below the map is a table to stick on 120 coupons which could be found in selected bars of chocolate. Once completed and having solved three 'enigme' along the route, one was supposed to sent off the completed table to Menier, resulting in most maps missing the lower part. This fine example has the table still intact. Jannot aka Jan-Loup was an artist and illustrator a French magazine from the 1950s to the early 1960s, and he also designed scarves for the fashion house Hérmes. The Menier Chocolate company was founded by Jean Antoine Brutus Menier in 1816. Though not trained as a pharmacist, he sold a variety of different powders for medicinal purposes and used chocolate as an ingredient to make the medicine more palatable. In 1836, Menier was the first company to introduce blocks of chocolate, covered in greenish-yellow wrapper which became iconic for the brand. And in 1893, the company started a poster advertising campaign, created by Firmin Bouisset, showing a little girl writing the name 'Chocolat Menier' on a wall with a piece of chocolate. The company is still going strong though the Menier family withdrew from management in 1959.

Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Six original paintings, each measuring 17" x 25". Gouache on artist boards. Near fine with some toning to the edges of a couple of paintings and tape remnants on the rear of each, but each image is still exceptionally fresh and vivid. The six images depict various animals - squirrel, owl, lion, dog, bear, and rooster - all with military hats and one with a complete uniform (except for pants). Several of the paintings appear to reinforce wartime ideals of conservation (squirrel storing nuts), education (the owl reading), and military service (the lion sitting on a pile of money with the various bills labeled "Security," "Leadership," "Welfare," "Prestige," and so on). The rear of two paintings have the fading stamp of the Simmons-Beal Agency that was located at 3 E. 40th Street in New York City from the 1930-1990s. We could find no specific information on the artist aside from references to several children's books he may have illustrated during the 1950s. That is, until we were contacted by the artist's great niece who revealed Johnson also worked under the pseudonym Jan Pfloog, who is credit with a number children's book, including *The Farm Book*, *Kittens Are Like That*, and *The Puppy Book*. Regardless of his identity, Jonston's artistic skills are quite apparent. An amusing and clever collection of mid-century paintings promoting attractive American virtues in support of the military.
