Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This 1989 second volume of Professor Williams' translation of al-Tabar¿'s account of the early 'Abb¿s¿ empire focuses on the reigns of the son - al-Mahd¿ - and grandsons - al-Hadi and H¿r¿n al-Rash¿d - of Caliph al-Mans¿r, the subject of the first volume. This was the 'Golden Prime' of the empire, before the civil war between the sons of al-Rash¿d and the movement of the capital away from Baghdad. Also considered is the story of the Persian aristocratic family, the Barmakis, who became the real rulers under the indolent al-Rash¿d, until he destroyed them in a rage which astonished his contemporaries. The events are narrated through the reminiscences of eyewitnesses, woven together by the great historiographer al-Tabar¿ (d. 923). The translator of the volume is an Islamicist who has lived many years in the Arab world and has a rare knowledge of its culture and literature.

Relation de l Egypte, par Abd-Allatif, Médecin Arabe de Bagdad; suivie De divers Extraits d Ecrivains Orientaux, et d un Etat des Provinces et des Villages de l Egypte dans le XIV siècle: Le Tout Traduit Et Enrichi De Notes Historiques Et Critiques, Par M. Silvestre de Sacy. Paris, de l Imprimerie Impériale, Treuttel & Würtz,1810.4to. XXIV + 752 + (1 errata)pp. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt, edges gilt; corners worn; rebacked. First French translation of one of the earliest works on Egyptology. It contains a vivid description of a famine and plague resulting from the Nile failing to overflow its banks (AD 1200-1202) and detailed descriptions of ancient Egyptian monuments. The most important work, and the only one printed, by 'Abd al-Latîf (1162-1231) considered one of the most enlightened men of his age. Born in Baghdad, he was given a prominent post in the great mosque of Damascus by Salah ud-Din (1187), from where he went to Egypt to teach at the Azhar. In Cairo he became acquainted with Maimonides. The present work is divided into 9 chapters with general observations on Egypt, its plants, animals, ancient monuments, buildings and ships, cookery, the Nile, and a description of the great plague and famine of 1200-1202 (= AH 597-598). As a physician Abd al-Latif had the opportunity of examining a large quantity of human remains which he did without the contemporary customary Galenic prejudice. He denounced alchemical superstition. This translation by Silvestre de Sacy is valued for its long notes on etymology, its comparison with other accounts of Egypt, and earlier translations of the work. Included is a gazeteer of Egypt (pp581-704) entitled État des provinces et des villages de l Égypte, dressé en l année 1376, sous le règne du Sultan Mélic-Alaschraf Schaban; traduit de l arabe par M. Silvestre de Sacy . Extensive indexes, and references to Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hebrew, Syriac, Chaldean & Coptic words. Ownership notes in brown ink dated Aug. 1811, the binding by C. Lewis in 1812, subsequently F. Chance of Croft Lodge, Cambridge, 21st May 1870. Ex-libris bookplates of C. Lambert and Norman Douglas Simpson inside front cover. Garrison [1768] cites White's bi-lingual Arabic/Latin Oxford edition of 1806; Ibrahim Hilmy I,p3; Sarton II, 2, p599.
