Der Jurist Karl Baldamus (1784-1852), hatte sich 1834 um eine Professur in Bern beworben und dort einige Monate verbracht. Seine Erfahrungen und Enttäuschungen schildert er hier in Form von Briefen. Gleich zu Beginn erklärt er: "Die Schweiz mag einmal eine Idylle gewesen sein. allein sie hat aufgehört Idylle zu sein. Die Schweiz ist jetzt ein Lehrgedicht und zwar ein politisches Lehrgedicht.". Er musste Bern wieder verlassen und rächte sich mit diesem Pamphlet vor allem an den Radikalen unter Schnell, Kasthofer, Schneider u.a., verteidigte hingegen den alten Fellenberg und das gemässigte Patriziat. Baldamus führte eine ruheloses Wanderleben durch Europa, konvertierte zum Katholizismus und danach wieder zum Protestantismus, schrieb Gedichte und Romane. "Seine Schriften selber sind fast verschollen; sie gehören zu den gehaltsvollsten und geistreichsten jener Zeit."
