Soft Cover/Stapled. Condition: New. Robert Casilla (Illustrator) (illustrator). First Edition, 2nd Printing. Text/NEW & Bright. 1993 First Edition, 2nd Printing. Stapled softcover/Fine. History. Biography of superlative Black American track & field athlete James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens (1913 - 1980), and a biography of American social history. Jesse, grandson of a slave, and the youngest of 10 children parented by Oakville, Alabama sharecroppers. Re-counted by David A. Alder, illustrated by Robert Casilla. In 1935, at 22 years old, within an hour, Jesse set 3 world records at the Big Ten track meet, Ann Arbor, Michigan ? hailed by many as "the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport". Then, the very next year, Jesse won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany to be celebrated as the black- American who "single-handedly" crushed Hitler's myth of "Aryan supremacy". Jesse's homecoming heralded w/parades in Chicago & New York City. At that time, before World War II, he was, of course, not even able tooccupy front seats of buses. Jesse proves to be a forerunner beyond the world of sports. In 1950 he was named the all-time greatest track-and-field star by the Associated Press; in the bicentennial year 1976, President Gerald R. Ford awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and, in 1987, President Jimmy Carter honored him w/the Living Legends Award. An outstanding athlete & an outstanding American, all young, and old, Americans should be familiar with. Fine copy.

This book provides an overview of the history, current state, and challenges facing Wesleyan Missions, the overseas evangelical missionary wing of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The author seeks to inspire continued support for this charitable organization by providing compelling statistics and anecdotes demonstrating the growth and continuing need of the service. Wesleyan Missions currently provides spiritual and material aid in a wide variety, geographically and demographically, across the globe. The author suggests that the financial struggles faced by both Wesleyan Missions and other organizations providing similar services is a paradox that results from the increased demands created by their successes. As people experience the benefits of Wesleyan services, they begin to understand the deep value and hence the need for support. The author argues that these organizations are facing a unique challenge: the very success of their work has led to increased demand and thus a need for greater financial resources. This book is an insightful and thought-provoking examination of the challenges and rewards of modern missionary work.
