Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Reference Copy. A Poor 8vo Blue Ribbon Books hardcover (1929 copyright by Harcourt, Brace and Company). Missing its dust jacket. Modest condition grade because of patches of black staining--probably book mold--on the pages' bottom edge that bleeds into the bottom margin of some pages. The m…oisture exposure has also caused gentle riffling and an occasionally light stain line in the lower third of the contents, plus a disturbance in the sheen in the lower half of the boards. The rear paste-down has a small bookseller label and small paper tears in the hinge/gutter. In other respects, a G hardcover with contents (x + 336 pp., + a frontispiece and 19 additional drawings) that appear mark-free, complete, and securely bound. Black cloth with spine gilt lettering and a blind stamped decoration on the upper board. Bumped and/or well-rubbed bottom corner tips; bumped spine head and tail edges. No ex-library markings. **Extra charges to cover shipping costs may apply to an order requesting expedited and/or international shipping because of the size and weight of this book.

Contact seller5-star sellerThe Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of Henry Fielding's most famous novel. Octavo, bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles to the spine, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, title page vignette, illustrated throughout. Boldly signed by illustrator Alexa…nder King on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1,500 numbered copies, this is number 1139. In fine condition. Introduction by J.B. Priestley. Illustrations by Alexander King. Henry Fielding (1707â"1754) was a seminal figure in the development of the English novel, whose works combined satirical wit, moral inquiry, and formal innovation. Trained as a playwright and later serving as a magistrate, Fielding brought a keen understanding of human behavior and social institutions to his fiction. 'Tom Jones' (1749) is a foundational work of the English novel that exemplifies the eighteenth-century shift toward realist fiction infused with moral and social commentary. Structured as a comic-epic in prose, the novel follows the life and misadventures of the titular foundling, whose journey from rural Somerset to London allows Fielding to satirize various aspects of British society, including class pretensions, legal hypocrisy, and sexual morality. Notable for its omniscient narrator and digressive chapter introductions, Tom Jones combines narrative innovation with Enlightenment values, presenting virtue as a matter of human imperfection rather than rigid moral codes.

Add to basketMatted Prints. Condition: Near Fine. NOTE: Not the Book; Removed Images from the Book. Eleven stunning, professionally-matted black and white images by Alexander King, originally illustrating C.J. Bulliet's Venus Castina, first published as a limited edition by Covici Friede in 1928, and subsequently reprinted several times. .Bu…lliet, a journalist, theatrical promoter and later well-known art critic for the Chicago Daily News was an art-savvy proponent of the Modernist movement, and fascinated by the concept of one particular aspect of the Roman goddess Venus (Castina, or chaste Venus. But that single term, encountered alone, can be misleading if or it representes only the gates to the temple; just beyond the portals of this general concept of "Chastity", resides the "Sacred Virgin", the undefeated AND undefeatable sublime "Diana" aspect of Venus, powerful, one unto themselves, who embodied "the yearnings of feminine souls locked up in male bodies.Bulliet's fascinating account included a rich assortment of figures across time: 'kings and princes and heroes of old days and modern.soft-eyed dreamers of a forbidden ineffable, warriors and poets, artists, statesmen, quacks, hoodlums and harlequins.". To this prodigious and scholarly history of famous female impersonators, came Vienna-born artist Alexander King (1899-1965). "Described as a thief, morphine addict, failing playwright and painter, Alexander King was a man of "iconoclastic observations and caustic humor who began his career as a painter of human figures, focused primarily on the face. Then he became an art thief, stealing fifty prints from the Metropolitan Museum. He was jailed twice, and married four times. He wrote a book, "Rich Man, Poor Man, Freud and Fruit," and died one day after appearing on "The Today Show" to publicize it." (Wikipedia). "To you who laugh in the Theater when a Male Moron puts on a Grass Skirt and dances a burlesque Spring Song in front of a Jazz Band; To you who giggle when the handsome young Preacher pitches high his voice and mimics a hoydenish Maiden at a Picnic Chicken Dinner; To you who find delight in the Girlish Pranks our College Boys are playing on each other and on their Girl Chums; To you who applauded in the World War the efforts of our War Department to guard our Young Soldiers from Female Contamination, leaving them to Other Devices; To you have closed our Houses of Prostitution and bade Young Men forget Sexual Desire in Athletic Friendship; To you who view with Equanimity the rapid spread of the 'Scythian madness; in America since the World War - To you, all and individually, is dedicated VENUS CASTINA" (Dedication Page). Alexander King (illustrator).
