En 1914 creó el Te…atro de Cámara que en muy poco tiempo se convierte en el centro de la creatividad experimental para muchos actores, pintores, escritores y músicos rusos. Desarrolló lo que el denominó Teatro Sintético que incorporaba ballet, ópera, circo, pantomima, historia del teatro y malabares. Le da especial importancia al trabajo con la voz y al ritmo situando al actor como fuerza motriz de la acción dramática. Tairov sostenía que el teatro era un arte en sí mismo y no un medio para trasmitir literatura. En su escuela desarrolló una compañía de ôactores-maestrosö que fueron los principales creadores de las puestas en escena. A partir de 1924, Tairov que se había unido al régimen soviético más por entusiasmo que por convicción ideológica, fue duramente criticado por sus investigaciones teatrales y descrito como burgués y antirrevolucionario. Sometido a grandes presiones es enviado con el Teatro de Cámara a realizar una gira por Siberia que dura casi dos años. Sobrevivió a las grandes purgas de Stalin y evitó el exilio como le sucedió a Evreinov o el trágico final de Meyerhold, fusilado en 1940. En mayo de 1949, el Comité Soviético para las Artes emitió una orden oficial para cerrar el Teatro de Cámara bajo la acusación de ôesteticismo y formalismoö y el edificio fue demolido. Es trasladado al Teatro Vajtángov trabajando bajo la supervisión de una junta de teatro estatal. En 1950 a Tairov lo ingresan en un centro psiquiátrico, falleciendo como consecuencia de un cáncer cerebral a los pocos meses.
