Dès 1907, Alfred Westphal a publié vingt-neuf des lettres de Quinet à s…on ami le Dr Pierre Lortet, éminent savant lyonnais (Lettres inédites d'E. Quinet. Lettre-Préface de Gabriel Monod; Notice d'A. Westphal sur Pierre Lortet, Paris, Stock = cet ouvrage !). Ces lettres confiées à A. Westphal par le propre fils du correspondant de Quinet, le Dr Louis Lortet, s'échelonnent de 1828 à 1860 (parmi elles, quatre lettres relatives au séjour de 1828 à Heidelberg, cinq lettres au voyage en Grèce). Dans la Revue d'Histoire littéraire de la France de 1907, 1908, 1910, Henri Monin, légataire des Papiers Chassin, qui a déjà fait paraître en 1904, dans la Revue du 1" août, dix-huit lettres inédites de Quinet à Chassin, compare le texte des lettres à Chassin publiées par Mme Quinet dans les Lettres d'exil, au manuscrit, et conclut que Mme Quinet, mystique de l'amour conjugal, c'est complu à sophistiquer, pour la postérité, les Lettres d'exil. Plus récemment, Jean Gaulmier ("Sur une lettre de Quinet", Revue de Littérature comparée, 1959) commente avec bonheur une lettre de Quinet à Félix Bonnaire, datée du 21 janvier 1840.
