Charles Macfarlane (1799 1858) was a Scottish writer, known as much for his historical and travel works as he was for his novels. He was the son of Robert Macfarlane. From January 1816 to May 1827 he lived in Italy. In 1827, he went to Turkey and lived for sixteen months in Constantinople and the Turkish provinces. Macfarlane settled in London, England in 1829, supporting himself by writing. He was for many years on the staff of the publisher, Charles Knight. Accompanied by his eldest son, then 16, Macfarlane returned to Turkey in 1847. On his way home, in the summer of 1848, they visited Messina and made a tour through the kingdom of Naples, the Abruzzi, the marches of Ancona, and Rome. His wife Charlotte died in 1854 at their home in Canterbury, Kent. In July 1857 he was nominated a poor brother of the London Charterhouse, where he died on 9 December 1858. Half Leather. Condition: Very Good binding. Wright and Buckingham's historical descriptions of various places in Belgium, the Rhine, Italy, Greece, and the Shores and Islands of the Mediterranean, with engraved illustrations by various artists. Complete with two volumes bound in one. Vol. I is complete with all 73 plates called for in the 'Contents,' though "Great Canal, and Antique Gothic House" [or "Ghent"] is bound in at Vol. II, p. 58, and "The City of Catania and Mount Etna" is bound in near Vol. II, p. 152. Vol. II is lacking pp. 25-32, and pp. 49-56, and also lacks the eight plates that would have been in those two signatures. This is quite possibly a binder's error, as there does not appear to be any explicit damage to the textblock at those locations; the binder also misplaces a number of plates, though most of these errors are simply a few pages off. Vol. I with all 73 plates. Vol. II with 73 of the 81 plates. Altogether with 146 of the 154 plates, which includes the frontispieces and additional title pages, engraved. Some foxing to the plates; previous owners' names on the front pastedown and recto of the initial frontispiece lacking front endpaper. Surface wear to the joints, spine, and corners of the boards. Some soiling to the cloth covered boards. Half brown leather with designs in blind, decorative gilt rules, and gilt lettering, and gray cloth covered boards. Very Good. Very Good binding.

His typescript autobiography is included in the archive which follows him through an apprenticeship in London's City Road with early practice as a cabinet maker before working alongside William Lethaby at the Central School and subsequently leading the cabinet department at the Shoreditch Technical Institution in London. His two most significant works, both published by Batsford, were "Modern Cabinet Work" (1909) which brought him to a wider audience and "Furniture for Small Houses" (1924) but as revealed by this archive, his work went much wider. Included in the archive is the following material: I. PHOTOGRAPHS A fantastic collection of gelatin photographs of furniture, many used as illustrations in Wells' books and labelled as such to verso. The short autobiography describes Wells' poor background, his apprenticeship in the City Road as a cabinet maker; mentored by Stephen Webb and W. R. Lethaby and then teaching-work at Central School and Shoreditch Technical Institute. The Typescript - Autobiography is included in a Folder (Numbered "9") which also includes: a.
