Five almanacs, (unpaginated but complete), text in French, 20.5 x 15.3 cm, the Berne almanac 20.5 x 16.6 cm, woodcut cover illustration of the Lame Messenger and several foldout woodcut illustrations and text illustrations, including a natural history plate of a Javanese fruit bat, folding table, scant spotting and toning, two almanacs with tape repair to the spine; original stab-sewn title-wrappers, some wear but in very good condition. Small group of almanacs including astronomical observations and phenomena, pieces on agronomy, agriculture and natural history, along with a number of moral and ethical commentaries. The trope of the "Messager Boiteux" (Lame Messenger) as the trustworthy source of news dates from a 17th Century satire by Comenius (see a blog on the subject by curator and artist Tjebbe van Tijen). These almanacs began in Germany, with French versions published in Berne from 1748 and in Strasbourg and Paris from 1814 and developed as sources of local news with a monthly calendar of market Fairs, literary excerpts, major events, celestial calendars and astrology. …

Condition: Good. A scarce almanac for Washington, D.C., with the first portion containing elaborately illustrated calendars for each month, with accompanying information on natural phenomena for the months including sunrise, sunsets, etc. The second part of the book contains a lengthy description of the federal government, with the final few pages describing the merits of the Louisiana State Lottery. Though the OCLC entry for the book which finds no physical holdingslists the publisher as "Almanac Publishing Co.," it is quite possible that the title was published by the Louisiana State Lottery as an advertising tool. The cover shows what appears to be Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, which famously performed at the Chicago World's Fair that year, but to our knowledge never performed in Washington, D.C. 4to, lithographed wraps, 40 pp. Wraps detached, contents excellent, good overall.…

This set notable for containing relatively early issues of Zadkiel, which began in 1831, and with the supplemental book catalogues in three instances; a nice run of Partridge, the extremely popular and long-running publication first published in 1680; several issues of the William Seed ephemerides, which are very scarce. Two volumes, 8vos, 17x11cm. Diagrams, illustrations, charts, tables. Recent quarter calf stamped in gilt with black spine labels, brown cloth boards. Fine Binding. Condition: Very Good+. A nice bound volume, sammelband, (fine binding of leather and marbled boards) of Whig Almanacs 1843 - 1855 (Lacks 1851) in excellent condition - although only the 1843 retains the original pictorial cover, complete otherwise. The almanacs include several interesting maps in the text including the 1846 almanac with full page woodcuts of both Oregon and Texas / Indian Territory. Minimal ex-library with an early association label to the front pastedown and marks to the rear pastedown. The contents themselves are not marked and though showing occasional foxing are generally quite fresh. The volume was professionally rebacked in fine leather with gilt printed red and green leather spine labels.…

Together with a handwritten calendar folded to form a pamphlet (285 x 215 mm). Three early 20th century almanacs printed around the fall of the Ottoman Empire and during the Turkish War of Independence. Ottoman almanacs had traditionally been handwritten, but these examples, ranging from 1918 to 1924, are instead tidily printed for a modern audience who still required the services an almanac had to offer. Each almanac covers each of the twelve months of the Rumi calendar, with each month stretching across two facing pages, each carefully tabulated, with numerous notes and calculations. A final two-page spread provides further detail on the year as a whole. - Ottoman almanacs served an important purpose: they helped to keep track of Muslim holy days, provided a calendar, and often tracked the movement of the sun, moon, and planets in the form of astronomical tables. - Included with this lot is a manuscript of detailed calendrical charts, written out by hand as was traditional. - Wrappers missing from two volumes, some exterior wear; manuscript calendar with rather severe edgewear and some staining.
