Preston [author of "The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey: its origin, development, and present status"] of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, while engaged in gravity and magnetic observations at Bridgetown in May last. The occupation of the old Naval Hospital which you kindly placed at the service of the party, lightened the labor of the observers very materially, and the assistance given by your subordinates in thepreparatory work enabled the observations to be made expeditiously and satisfactorily.".

3 x 5 inch. Head and shoulders profile pose. - Giaever was a Norwegian-American physicist who shared the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physics with Leo Esaki and Brian Josephson. One half of the prize was awarded jointly to Esaki and Giaever "for their experimental discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in semiconductors and superconductors, respectively".
8vo. 1 p. Printed letterhead. To Mr. Ancell who asked Hess about biographical data about the Nobel Prize Winner. He recommends 'Via Regia'" Nobelpreisträger auf dem Weg in Atom-Zeitalter (1943). []" - Hess shared the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physics with Carl David Anderson "for his discovery of cosmic radiation".
8vo. 1 p. Printed letterhead The Johns Hopkins University". To Robert A. Morris from the Photographic Training Department: I have an excellent replica grating 4 inches square ruled with 15,000 lines instead of 7500, mounted between two pieces of plate glass. I have a numer of these on hand and hve been asking $ 50 each for them. Gratings similar to these I think are used in some of the other departments of your company, I can send one to you if you care to see what they look like. I should imagine that 15,000 would be even better than 7500 for photographic training." - Wood was an American physicist and inventor who made pivotal contributions to the field of optics. He pioneered infrared and ultraviolet photography. Wood's patents and theoretical work inform modern understanding of the physics of ultraviolet light, and made possible myriad uses of UV fluorescence, which became popular after World War I. He published many articles on spectroscopy, phosphorescence, diffraction, and ultraviolet light.
4to. 1 p. Printed letterhead Research Institutes | The University of Chicago". To Robert ancell in Albuquerque: The only proposal I can make to you is to try to get the yearly appearing reports of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science on the Novel festivity of each year. In these little books you will find also pictures and a brief biography of each Nobel Prize winner at the timethey received the Prize. I am sure you will find these books in every great university library or, at least, in the Library of Congress in Washington." - Franck was a German-American physicist who shared the 1925 Nobel Prize in Physics with Gustav Ludwig Hertz "for their discovery of the laws governing the impact of an electron upon an atom". He completed his doctorate in 1906 and his habilitation in 1911 at the Frederick William University in Berlin, where he lectured and taught until 1918, having reached the position of professor extraordinarius. He served as a volunteer in the German Army during World War I. He was seriously injured in 1917 in a gas attack and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class.
125 : 175 mm. Mounted to larger album page. Nice head and shoulders photograph of the physicist. - Maria Goeppert Mayer was a German-American atomic and nuclear physicist who shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics with J. Hans D. Jensen and Eugene Wigner. One half of the prize was awarded jointly to Goeppert Mayer and Jensen for their model of the atomic nucleus. She was the second woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics, the first being Marie Curie in 1903. In 1986, the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award for early-career women physicists was established in her honor.

4to. 6 lines on 1 page. Together with other autographs (see below). Stored in sleeves in a contemporary black binder. A small but fine collection of autographs by eminent 20th century scientists, assembled by the Chinese mathematician Shih Wei-Shu (1931-98), a member of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study who worked on topology and partial differential equations. - The first item is inscribed by J. Robert Oppenheimer, the "father of the atomic bomb": "To W. Shih, with respect, admiration and profound good wishes". - Further signatures include: - Maclane, Saunders, American mathematician (1909-2005). Autograph inscription signed. N. p. o. d. 4to. 6 lines on 1 page. "To my good friend Weishu Shih, in appreciation of his many stimulating ideas, in topology, in homological algebra, and in categories, and with my very best wishes for the success of his work in the future". - Mehrotra, Harish-Chandra, Indian-American mathematician and physicist (1923-1983). Autograph inscription signed. N. p., 25 Feb. 1962. 4to. 3 lines on 1 page. "Wishing you all good luck". - Morse, Marston, American mathematician (1892-1977). Typed letter signed. N. p., 12 March 1964. 4to. ½ page. "Dear Dr Shih, It was a good fortune to come to know you recently. Your broad interest in mathematics includes subjects as diverse as differential geometry, topology and celestial mechanics. I hope that we may be able to work together sometime in the future. Whether or not you are my assistant this will be an honor and an inspiration". - Weil, André, French mathematician (1906-98). Autograph inscription signed. Princeton, 3 March 1964. 4to. 1 page. "'Les mathématiques sont comme le cochon, tout en est bon' (Lagrange). À M. Shih Wei-Shu en témoignage de mes sentiments cordiaux". - Milnor, John Willard, American mathematician (b. 1931). Signature. 4to.
4to. 1 p. Printed letterhead University of California, Livermore Radiation Laboratory". To eminent American physicist Joaquin M. Luttinger (1923-1997): As I wrote to Heinz Barschall, we are now going after your clearance with hammer and tongs. I think that you are quite right to want to get a definite clarification of this matter. In urging that the clearance question should be settled with all possible speed, I am of course using the argument that you are needed here in Livermore very badly. We hope that as soon as we have your clearance, we shall be able to make plans for an extended visit for you at Livermore and have your full cooperation here, at least for several months. Of course, it would be by far best from our point of view if you could make up your mind, if you come, to work here full time and permanently [the previous two words added in holograph] and I should not be at all suprised if you would find it sufficiently interesting so that you would want to do that. It is necessary, however, that you should make up your mind about that until after you have got here and had a chance to get acquainted with our work, which would take a period perhaps such as three months or a full summer. When I talked with you on the phone I believe that I mentioned to you that we are trying to maintain good liaison with Berkeley and that the theorists working here are encouraged to spend their time to some extent with work of the Radiation Laboratory in Berkely. I would definitely urge that with anybody who is staying here altogether. I think that until you have been here a short time you should have very definitely in mind, wo concentrate on the new things here just to get in the swing of things.According to the best of my memory, I have never met you. However, I have heard so many nice things that I am quite eager to meet you and have a chance to work with you []".
