Dirigida por Antonio Malonda y realizada con el Grupo Geroa, uno de los más destacados de la historia del teatro vasco, estuvo rodeada de polémica al trasladar a hoy en día el asesinato por Lope de Aguirre de su hija Doña Elvira, como un reflejo de la Euskadi actual. La última cena, estrenada bajo la dirección de Juan Pastor en La Guindalera, de Madrid, en 2010, fue finalista del premio Valle-Inclán. Al borde del 'cese definitivo' de la actividad de ETA, relata el encuentro de un padre constitucionalista y su hijo miembro de la organización, tras una larga separación. Se ha escrito que culmina dos búsquedas constantes en el autor: "el intento de restaurar la tragedia y la indagación en la sociedad vasca contemporánea: sus raíces, sus crisis, su identidad" (Ricardo Doménech). IGNACIO AMESTOY EGIGUREN (Bilbao, 1947) pertenece a la Generación de la Transición. Premio Nacional de Literatura Dramática en 2002, por Cierra bien la puerta, ha recibido en dos ocasiones el Lope de Vega: en 1981, por Ederra, y en 2001, por Chocolate para desayunar (Editorial Fundamentos). De 2005 a 2008 fue director de la RESAD. El toro rojo', al hilo de la biografía real de un ex militante de ETA, el actor Patxi Bisquert, que colaboró en la realización del texto con el autor y luego interpretó su propio personaje en escena, se traza un itinerario metafórico sobre la realidad vasca en el último medio siglo. Polémica en su estreno madrileño del CNNTE, la obra fue calificada por la crítica de Euskadi como el 'Peer Gynt' vasco. Y si 'Betitzu. El toro rojo' tiene una base testimonial, 'Gernika, un grito. 1937' se acerca implacable al teatro documento.
