Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Amontons, Guillaume (1663-1705). "Discours sur quelques proprietes de l'Air & le moyen d'en connoitre la temperature dans tous les climats de la Terre" in Histoire et Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences Annee 1702, printed in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier, 1737. The paper appears in the section Memoires de Mathematique et de Physique. 153x95mm, (viii), 184;451pp, 12 folding plates, with the Amontons on pp 216-243. Bound in full leather, with raised bands and gilt-decorated dentelles, blindstamped decorated covers. Marbled pastedowns, though lacking the front and rear marbled endpapers. Very nice condition, very tight and square. There's a little bit of staining and a 1-inch tear on the title page, otherwise a very clean, crisp copy. [++] ".the other was an air thermometer independent of the atmospheric pressure. Air occupied the top of one of the branches of a U-shaped tube, and by its dilation it pushed down one of the mercury columns so that the other end of the branch formed a barometric chamber. In 1702 Amontons returned to thermometry. Having noted that water ceases to increase its temperature from the boiling point, he proposed that the latter be the fixed thermometric point. He also observed that for an equal elevation of temperature, the increase of pressure of a gas always exists in the same proportion, no matter what the initial pressure. The following year Amontons indicated practical ways of graduating ordinary alcohol thermometers, Also, returning to his observations of 1702, he proposed an explanation for certain natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes: If there is air very deep within the earth, it is extremely compressed and could reach an irresistible pressure as the result of a relatively small increase in temperature.Among Amonton's last works was a barometer with a U-tube, without an open surface of mercury, to be used on shipboard. Using the same receptacle and liquids whose coefficients of expansion differed, Amontons was able to establish as false the theory that liquids "condense and cool first, before expanding with approaching heat." The observed results were due only to the expansion of the containers. Also, using a barometer as an altimeter, he tried to verify the exactitude of Mariotte's (Boyle's) law at low pressures."--Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography online. ALSO, see Parkinson "Breakthroughs" on Amonton, "[who] determines that heat, in addition to pressure, affects barometers" (1703).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. AMONTONS, Guillaume. Binding and Condition: full leather with raised bands. There is an old hand-lettered paper label on the spine, plus a small and tasteful bookplate and a small antiquarian rubber stamp on the title page a Very Good copy. [++] The first paper. "Moyens." ("Means of conveniently substituting the action of fire for the force of men and horses in order to move machines", with "move" meaning to drive the machine, to power the machine) appears on pp 159-179, and discusses Amontons' extraordinary "moulin a feu", a "fire windmill", or hot air engine. (The apparatus would heat the water, the expanding air then pushing the water into upper cells of the machine, which would forcemovment in the wheel by forcing water in upper cell to rotate the wheel.) The paper is illustrated with an engraving of the machine that is accompanied by a very thorough description of how it works and the numerous experiments conducted by Amontons on it. It is a very early appearance for what it is, preceding Robert Stirling's 1818 engine, which was the first of its kind set to a practical application. [++] "De la resistance causee." ("On the resistance caused in machines, both by the rubbing of the parts that compose them and by the stiffness of the cords that one uses in them, and the way of calculating both), appears on pp 259-286 (with five plates of data) . This is the statement of Amontons' law: "According to Amontons law, increasing the temperature of a gas while holding its volume constant increases the pressure of the gas. When gas particles heat up and gain energy, they move faster. This increases their collisions with each other and their container, causing greater pressure."--Wolfram Research. [++]".this behaviour of friction was rediscovered by Amontons (and is) now called Amontons' law of friction and holds for various systems at first approximation. The ratio of the friction force to the loading force is called the friction coefficient and according to Amontons' law, this coefficient does not depend on the loading force or the apparent contact area."--Otsuki &Matsukawa, "Systematic Breakdown of Amontons' Law of Friction for an Elastic Object Locally Obeying Amontons' Law", 2 April 2013. [++]"Amontons (1663 -1705) was a French scientific instrument inventor and physicist (and) pioneer in studying the problem of friction. Among his contributions to scientific instrumentation were improvements to the barometer, hygrometer, and thermometer, particularly for use of these instruments at sea."--Wikipedia [++] "Between 1650-1750,Papin, Somerset, Savary, Newcomen opened the way to the steam engine.Amontons.was the first to propose in 1699 a heat-engine, using the expansion of air to provide the motive power. He called his machine a "fire-mill" which was a hot air engine with external combustion using the imbalance of water to generate direct rotation. His objective was clear and the title of his writing is explicit and says it all. His machine was meant for being used on an industrial scale. The fundamental principle leading his invention was to use heat to create mechanical work, which is the principle of all modern heat engine of our days."--Hot Air Engines dot org [++] WRITE for longer description!

FULL VOLUME 1st AMSTERDAM EDITION OF AMONTONS' DESCRIPTION OF HIS CONSTANT VOLUME AIR THERMOMETER, a device that functioned "independent of the atmospheric pressure). In other words, this is "Amontons' account of his invention of the first thermometer with which temperature was measured by the pressure of air."(Magie "A Source book in Physics," pp. 128. In Amontons' invention, "air occupied the top of one of the branches of a U-shaped tube, and by its dilation it pushed down one of the mercury columns so that the other end of the branch formed a barometric chamber" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography 1, 138). His device evolved from the work of Galileo, Boyle, and others. In the paper offered here, Amontons describes that process as well as the construction and function of his invention. As stated (but here in a bit more detail) Amontons' thermometer consisted of a U-shaped tube ending in a bulb, filled with mercury, the long end of the tube being 45 inches, the height of the long arm being the measure of the "spring" which the air, in the region above the mercury in the big bulb, had obtained. Guillaume Amontons, (1663 - 1705) was a French physicist and inventor of scientific instruments, best known for his work on friction (see separate offering below) and the subject of the work offered here, temperature measurement. WE SEPARATELY OFFER: 1699 FIRST EDITION OF GUILLAUME AMONTONS'S TWO PAPERS ESTABLISHING THE CONCEPT OF FRICTION AS WELL AS THE LAW OF PROPORTIONALITY, the idea that frictional force is proportional to normal forces. CONDITION & DETAILS: In: Histoire de L'Academie Royale des Sciences. Annee 1702. Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier. Ex-libris bearing only a small, old, and discreet stamp on the title page. 13 engraved copperplates (including frontispiece); many in-text illustrations; 12mo (7 x 4 inches). First appearance of this paper in which Amontons describes his invention, construction and function of his air thermomer. He thus improves on Gallileo's design by using air pressure instead of volume. The paper is the earliest study in this field, and Amontions concludes "that unequal masses of air under equal weights invcrease equally the force of their spring for equal degrees of heat" Fifteen years later Gay-lussac performed the same experiments with better technique and results - the Gay-Lussac laws. The paper "contains Amontons' account of the first thermometer with which temperature was measured by the pressure of air."(Magie "A Source book in Physics", pp. 128 ff.)."His first scientific production was a Hygrometer in 1687.The other was an air thermometer independent of the atmospheric pressure.
