cloth with dustjacket. Doolittle, Amos (illustrator). 8.5 x 11 inches. cloth with dustjacket. 192 pages. As a copperplate engraver, Amos Doolittle (1754-1832) played an important role during the American colonies' war for independence and the early years of the new nation. He completed his apprenticeship in New Haven, Connecticut, around 1770 and continued to work actively in that city for over sixty years. His first known attempts are the views of the battles of Lexington and Concord--four plates that he engraved, printed and published in 1775. Even today, Doolittle's first attempt, although crude in workmanship, continues to be often reproduced. Doolittle did general engraving and printing throughout his career. Maps for atlases and illustrations for books became his specialty, but he also engraved maps and broadsides that were published separately. Scholars have identified more than 600 Doolittle engravings, both signed and unsigned. During the course of his career, one of Doolittle's major accounts was with Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey (1760-1839). This book contains excerpts from correspondence between the two, never published before, which reveal much about business practices of the time. This book was written to complement similar works on Doolittle's contemporaries, including Paul Revere. There are chapters on various types of his work, including his tune-books, maps, illustrations, bank notes and more. The book also includes two useful appendices, cataloguing books containing his engravings and references to him and his work. Co-published with the American Historical Print Collectors Society, Amos Doolittle is a valuable contribution to the study of American engravings.

Hardcover. Condition: vg. One of the Earliest Maps of the United States Printed in AmericaAnd other Maps by Amos DoolittleStyled the second edition, after the first edition of 1784 (which only had 2 maps). This edition of Geography Made Easy is t. 12mo. Contemporary calf, red leather spine label. Binding a bit rubbed. Front free endpaper excised. 322 pages plus 8 engraved maps (1 folding). Title page with marginal tanning, offsetting from facing engraving, and small nicks to lower margin (printing unaffected). Leaves tanned, scattered foxing. Just about very good given time and place of publication. Ink ownership inscription on verso of world map: "Benjn. B. Fowler's Property / Novem. 1st 1802." One of the Earliest Maps of the United States Printed in AmericaAnd other Maps by Amos DoolittleStyled the second edition, after the first edition of 1784 (which only had 2 maps). This edition of Geography Made Easy is the first to have maps engraved by the master engraver Amos Doolittle, including a double hemisphere map of the world as well as maps of the United States, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The book was printed by Isaiah Thomas & Ebenezer T. Andrews.According to Donald C. O'Brien:Doolittle's map career began slowly and did not really take off until after Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews of Boston entered into a contract with Jedidiah Morse. In 1790, they became the printer and publisher of Geography Made Easy. Doolittle engraved twenty-five plates, in varying sizes, for three of these editions (1790,1794, 1796) - Amos Doolittle: Engraver of the New Republic (2008), pp. 21-22.The folding map of the United States is notable as one of the earliest maps of the United States to be printed in America, following the Buell map and William McMurray map, both of 1784. Doolittle had assisted Buell in the engraving of his map, and clearly barrowed much cartographic information from the earlier map. Doolittle's map shows the western states reaching the Mississippi River, part of the Louisiana territory, and the region north to Minnesota. The map identifies the territories inhabited by the Cherokee, "Chicasaw," and the Arcanses. The handsomely engraved cartouche incorporates Lady Liberty and an American eagle holding a banner that reads Per Aspera ad Astra. This edition of Morse's popular work has 8 engraved maps engraved by Doolittle:The World Agreeable to the last Discoveries in the South Seas. The earliest issue of Amos Doolittle's map of Connecticut intended for separate sale, not as part of an atlas or other book. The first issue of this map was engraved for Carey's American edition of GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED (1795), and also appeared in Carey's AMERICAN ATLAS that same year. This version is slightly larger than the original state, and the attribution line indicating publication for Mathew Carey has been removed, as has any plate number. Thompson notes: "in this state, the map is on a large sheet with generous margins, apparently issued for separate sale.some time after 1800.Amos Doolittle (1754) was a famous and prolific early Connecticut engraver whose work continued for some three decades after this date." The cartouche for this map of Connecticut is unchanged from the original through the 1814 edition of Carey's world atlas; by 1818 the plate had been retouched and the word "Connecticut" enhanced in the title. THOMPSON, MAPS OF CONNECTICUT 36. Map, 16 x 18½ inches. Outlined in period color, faded. Light dampstaining to lower left corner. Lightly and evenly toned. About very good. Matted.

Engraving on two sheets joined, 33.625" x 24.875" at neat line plus margins, uncolored. CONDITION: Minor soiling, a few mended edge tears, including one extending 8" from the upper edge and another 3.5" from the lower edge, both expertly mended and all-but invisible. Still, untrimmed and in generally spectacular condition. A remarkableand mammothbroadside chronological chart employing text and images to depict six millennia of ecclesiastical and secular history. The Epitome was designed by the Rev. David Sherman Rowland (17191794), who began his career as a minister in Providence, Rhode Island but was "forced to flee his pulpit there because of his inflammatory exhortations on freedom and taxation" (First Church Windsor). He spent the rest of his career a minister of the First (Congregational) Church in Windsor, Connecticut. He was succeeded in 1790 by his son the Rev. Henry Augustus Rowland (1764-1835), who, along with his elder brother William Frederic Rowland (17611843), pastor of the First (Congregational) Church in Exeter, New Hampshire, arranged for the chart's posthumous publication. The earliest announcement appeared in the New-Hampshire Gazette for June 17, 1800 and described the chart as follows: This Epitome contains a compendious representation of the Churchthe garden of Edenthe Adamical Dispensation in a dark shadowalso the different Dispensations till the Messiah camethe state of the Church, with the dark shades of error which obscured its lustrethe running off of the man of sinthe several channels in which the more important truths were conveyedthe various sectariesevents before and since the Christian EraProphetic periodsthe most noted councilswitnesses for the truth in every ageand a summary description of the leading sectaries" (p. 4) An advert appeared soon after in the Courier of New Hampshire for July 5, 1800 (p. 4), offering subscriptions for $2 per impression, with "the work to be put in execution as soon as 500 copies are subscribed for." It must have taken time to drum up the requisite number of orders, as the Epitome was not published until 1806. The finished product appears very much as advertised. The body is divided into eight columns, of which the central six constitute a timeline of "The Christian Church divided into Seven Periods," the first beginning in 9 A.D. and the last concluding at some indefinite future date with "The Heavenly State." These six columns list emperors and kings, major sects, key secular events (with the years 16001800 emphasizing early American history), Church Councils, and major religious figures. The left-most column provides a chronology of pre-Christian history, while that on the right gives brief descriptions of the "leading sectaries." The central image depicts the Church as a large river flowing from Solomon's Temple, with numerous branches splitting off, particularly during the Reformation, and the anticipation that they will reunite in the main stream of the Church in the future. As mentioned earlier, Rowland was an ardent patriot, and the broadside holds an implicit message about the linked courses of Church and American history: The final three secular events listed are the Declaration of Independence, the Federal Constitution and the French Revolution, suggesting that the new republics would prefigure a period of ecclesiastical unity and peace. Stylistically, An Epitome of Ecclesiastical History is an interesting hybrid. On the one hand, most of its chronological information is conveyed in the ancient "Eusebian" format, named after the 4th-century Romano-Christian chronicler. This format entailed a simple table with kingdoms or other thematic topics listed across the top and dates listed down the right- or left-most column. It was simple to execute and enabled the viewer to compare concurrent events across the known world; but it tended to be crowded, grueling to read, and not terribly memorable except for the most gifted. By contrast, the central stream image may have been inspired by Friedrich Strass's 1803 Strom der Zeiten, which employed a visual metaphor of interweaving streams and rivers to treat the rise and fall of kingdoms and empires. Thus, Rowland's work can be seen as a sort of compromise or transitional approach, reflecting a tentative attempt to move beyond the limits of the traditional Eusebian model without abandoning it altogether. Amos Doolittle The Epitome was engraved and published by the remarkable Amos Doolittle of New Haven. Doolittle (17541832) worked in New Haven and was probably America's most prolific early engraver. His career spanned seven decades and yielded hundreds of portraits, views, book illustrations and maps, but he is best known for his historical prints, most famously his suite of engravings of the battles at Lexington and Concord. Art historians are often unjustly dismissive of his output; Stauffer for example stuffily pronounces that "his work, at the best, possesses little other than historical interest." (Stauffer I:67) This is terribly unfair: while some of his early worknotably the Lexington and Concord engravingswas indeed crude, much of his later work is quite accomplished, as evidenced by the detail and clarity of this plan of New Haven. Even when the charge is merited however, the "historical interest" is extreme. Doolittle's political and historical prints documented some of the most important events of his time, and he engraved some of the most significant maps issued in the early years of the republic. An early and scarce American chronological chart, produced by one of America's great early engravers and offered here in stellar condition. "Improve the Moment" (motto of the Mechanic Library Society) Engraved bookplate, trimmed to within the plate mark, not affecting the image. One of two known bookplates designed by Doolittle for the Mechanic Library Society in New-Haven. The image was also printed as a woodcut in advertisements for the Society. It features a gently ironic vignette of two quite buff, and yet winged cherubs, beating out metal across a large anvil. Their faces are well-defined, and may therefore be actual portraits of well-known "mechanics" (or more appropriately "mechanicals"), who were in this case natural philosophers and amateur scientists, rather than manual labourers. The Society was preceded by the New Haven Young Men's Institute, which changed its name to the Mechanic Library Society in 1793, when it described itself as: "a public library in the city of New Haven", although it was for the use of subscribers only. In 1801, it published its 'Constitution and bye-laws. with a catalogue of books', suggesting that this bookplate was prepared in advance of that. A native of Cheshire Connecticut, where he lived his entire life, Amos Doolittle (1754-1832) was apprenticed as a young man to silversmith Eliakim Hitchcock, also of Cheshire. He is best known as an early American engraver of maps: those in Jedidiah Morse's 'Geography Made Easy' (1784), the first American geography, are his earliest. However, they were preceded by a famous series of engravings of 'The Battles of Lexington and Concord', New Haven, December 1775. Doolittle participated in the fight, but the engravings are after drawings by Ralph Earle. They remain the only pictorial record, by a contemporary American, of these important revolutionary battles. Doolittle became a versatile engraver, and in addition to maps he created political cartoons, invitations, bank notes, labels, music, bookplates, diplomas, certificates, tickets, Masonic aprons and ephemera, charts, book and magazine illustrations, religious and moralizing prints, portraits, and historic scenes; and was also known as a printer and publisher, a "jeweler, a calico printer, and an engraver of clock faces" (Steinway). Rare: only two institutional examples known, at Colonial Williamsburg, and Yale; the Virginia Museum Fine Arts holds an example of the earlier bookplate. Provenance: inscribed with the numbers "725" (presumably the catalogue reference number for the original Mechanic Library book) and "447".

His career spanned six decades, beginning at the time of the Revolution, and Doolittle was one of the first American printmakers to rival his European counterparts for the American market. A native of Connecticut, Doolittle learned to engrave in metal through his apprenticeship to a silversmith. His career as an independent craftsman was interrupted by army service during the American Revolution, during which time he met Ralph Earl, whose drawings of battle scenes, including the battles of Lexington and Concord, Doolittle was later to engrave on copper. The success of these historical scenes, which were published in New Haven in 1775, enabled Doolittle to abandon his trade as a silversmith. Responding to patriotic demand for images of the new American leaders, Doolittle engraved likenesses of successive American presidents, including George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. He also engraved book illustrations, scenic views and bookplates. Although not the first engraver in America, as he was later to claim, Doolittle was the only one In the course of his lengthy career as an engraver, Doolittle had illustrated several religious works and Bibles. The Prodigal Son series is, however, his major independent production in that field. It is remarkable that Doolittle dressed his figures in contemporary dress and placed them in a setting of familiar New England landscapes and buildings. The scenes are rendered with utter sincerity and effectiveness in their appeal to Puritan morality. Engraving New Haven, Connecticut, 1814 1814 Size: Unframed: 14 1/4 x 11 1/4". Book.
