Sie sind hervorragende Beispiele für die Form des Concerto grosso, obwohl in einigen von ihnen das Soloinstrument im Mittelpunkt steht, um das Werk zu einem voll entwickelten Konzert zu machen. Das Vierte ist ein Konzert für Violine mit zwei Blockflöten. Mit dem groß angelegten fünften Konzert schuf Bach in der Tat ein vollwertiges Klavierkonzert mit einer gewaltigen Kadenz von 65 Takten im ersten Satz. Das Sechste Konzert kehrt zur Form des Concerto grosso zurück, allerdings mit einer ungewöhnlichen Besetzung - es gibt keine Violinen.
