This is the first complete edition of a curious work by Andreas Cless (not named on title page). It is considered one of the most important and detailed works of the Ratio-Status , that is, the rational of the state literature, which plays a major role in many baroque novels. This work (influenced by Francisco Gómez de Quevedo (1580 1645) and Johann Michael Moscherosch (1601 1669)) illuminates the political and constitutional relations from the imperial city. Cless was an important interpreter of 17th c. Raison d etat. The work is cast in the form of a descriptive dream by the author, graphically depicted by the frontis engraving, and while commenting on contemporary political trends also lambasts the Hapsburg thugs then running roughshod over Europe. In fact, it was reported that Cless was clubbed to death with sandbags by a bunch of Spanish mercenaries shortly after the publication of this work. The author's resentment towards the French, which was quite common at the time, comes to light. He sees Latin as a language of learning in particular as being threatened by the penetration of the French language into the German-speaking world: "Unfortunately, it has come to this point that after this French language was brought home by some of our countrymen, the ancient Latin, which otherwise reigns as queen over all others, wants to give way and disappear, even though it has cost us so many a fine slap in the face." Frontispiece: The depiction gives the viewer a perspective view of a room, in the center of which stands a state bed crowned by a canopy. In it rests a sleeping three-headed figure, identified as Ratio-Status Dormiens. On the left and right sides of the bed stand two female figures facing the sleeper, holding up scrolls: On the left one can read "Particular letters and wise people's opinions", on the right "Newspapers' advice and Mr. Omni's chatter". Both female figures seem to be whispering to the sleeping Ratio-Status, speech bubbles explain that the lady on the left is giving him "veritates", i.e. truths, while the lady on the right is telling "mendacia", lies. The description says: "Not that one should believe it as a true law, because lies and truth lead from one to the other." The three heads of the Ratio-Status stand for the scholar, the priest and the soldier: "Three heads are in the bed, because in the world there are three classes: scholar, priest and soldier." At the foot of the bed is a round table on which the attributes of these classes can be seen. On the left side are the priest's robe and hat, on the right a rapier, pistols and sword belt. In the middle of the table between these symbols of the ecclesiastical and military spheres is a stack of books, which represents the balancing law. Despite the popularity of his Schwätz-Gesicht almost nothing is known about the author of this source, Andreas Cless. He also appears as a contributor to a collection of dissertations published in 1603/4 (Theorematum Metaphysicum Exercitationes Quatuordecim); otherwise, no other works written by him could be identified.
