Eingebettet in die Zürcher Theaterszene der 20er bis 40er Jahre erscheint das Laien-Wandertheater 'Freie Bühne' als Prototyp eines immer wieder geforderten schweizerischen Berufs-Wandertheaters, in welches es sich nicht zuletzt mangels ausreichender Unterstützung allerdings nie umbilden konnte. Die Freie Bühne wurde eine Wegbereiterin des politischen Cabarets in der Schweiz, auch des über die Grenzen hinaus bekannten 'Cornichon'.
