Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Parallel columns with Greek and Latin translations. Quarto in a very early binding using a vellum antiphonal leaf mounted over boards. On the title page is an engraved printer's device and on the last recto, a woodcut printer's device. Condition: some minor rubbing & nicking to the edges of the binding; the binding is also age-darkened with minor soiling; minor browning to the pages along with slight foxing. The first pastedown has an old armorial bookplate and there is an old ownership marking on the 1st free endpaper. Several lines of very old notations are on the blank leaf facing the title page along with a few very old marginalia markings and underlining in the early pages of the text; several of the first few leaves are loose; the last free endpaper is detached but present; mild scattered foxing throughout. This collection of the Lives of Eminent Commanders, along with his lives of his friend Atticus, and a sketch of Cato the Elder written at Atticus' request, are the only surviving works of the first-century BC biographer Cornelius Nepos, and once formed part of a broader collection, Deviris illustribus. The Lives include Themistocles, Dion, Pausanias, Timoleon, and Hannibal; the most interesting character portrayal is that of Alcibiades. The biographies of Cato and Atticus are the most accomplished these survived separately in a manuscript of the letters of his friend Cicero. After studies at the university of Louvain, Andreas Schott travelled in France before settling in Spain and then Italy, where he held professorships in Greek and rhetoric. In 1597 he returned to his native Antwerp, teaching and writing at the city's Jesuit college. He was a prolific editor and translator of classical and patristic texts, beginning with an edition of Nepos in 1577.In this later edition, the Lives are prefaced by a selection of related texts including 'Origo gentis Romanae' and 'Deviris illustribus Urbis Romanae', first published by Schott in 1579 and ascribed by him to Sextus Aurelius Victor. Provenance: The Scottish patriot Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653?1716) 'was also an extremely passionate and knowledgeable book-collector' (Willems, p.xi). He probably started collecting around 1675 and over a period of forty years assembled a library of some six thousand books, almost certainly the largest private collection in Scotland at the time. Bound in a contemporary German (Swiss) binding of alum-tawed pigskin over beech boards, with Spes panel-stamp and roll decoration. Hinged solid brass clasps (in functioning order).Front panel ''Impetrat alma fidescri / Sto. Quam Dante Salute : / M. Expectare soror Spes''. Back panel ''Veritas Deterraortaes / Tueritas Deterraortae .''. Edges painted red. Back cover with some tiny perpendicula wormholes, affecting the blank margin of just 1 printed leaf (the last one). The impression of the panel on back cover a bit faded. Further condition of the binding is superb, very attractive and the front cover in near perfect state of preservation. With the dated (1599 ) manuscript ex-libris on the title page of the Cistercian Abbey of Saint Urban in Pfaffnau (near Luzern, Switserland). Tipped on to the inside of the front cover: a large woodcut ex-libris of Ulrich abbott of Sankt Urban. This could be either Ulrich Amstein (1588 - 1627) or Ulrich Glutz-Ruchti (1687 - 1701). The author Pedro de Ribadeneira was one of the first jesuits to follow the founder Ignatius of Loyola of whom he wrote the first biography. He was also involved in the foundation of the Jesuit order in the Southern Netherlands. He resided in Antwerp during longer periods. The Borgia biography was first published in Spanish (Madrid 1592). This translation into Latin by the Antwerp jesuit Schott contains also another work by Ribadaneire: his Pia Opuscula. The translator Schott must have met Ribadaneira at the university of Gandia (Valencia) where he teached theology during several years. This edition is rare and unknown to De Backer-Sommervogel. Belgica Typographica 6635. The finely preserved binding,can be assigned; thanks to the datable manuscript ex-libris , to a binder working for ; or a bookdealer selling to the Pfaffnau abbey ; or a binder working for the second abott Ulrichj (after 1687).
