Paperback. Sapajou (illustrator). xxxii, 246p., wraps, 5x8 inches, illus., wraps lightly worn else very good condition. Originally published in 1937 and 1938. The former Russian Imperial Army lieutenant Sapojnikoff, a White Russian refugee who settled in Shanghai in 1920, worked as a cartoonist for various newspapers including the North-China Daily News. His work, published under the pseudonym Sapajou, was quite influential in 1930s China (Richard Rigby postulates a possible influence on the famous San Mao series). When Japan occupied Shanghai and his fellow newspapermen were interned or forced to leave, Sapojnikoff made the decision to work with the new administration. His reputation has been substantially whitewashed in recent years, but his work in occupied Shanghai was ardently pro-Nazi and pro-Japanese fascist. After the war he was unable to find work, and left for a refugee camp in the Philippines on the eve of the establishment of the PRC, dying soon thereafter.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Political elites in liberal democracies are showing heightened concern about threats to national security from the overseas political activities of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) and its supporters. This Whitehall Paper argues that an effective liberal democratic policy response requires careful disaggregation of distinct sets of risks: to national security; civil liberties; and academic freedom. Although widely cited as a model to follow, Australias response to these issues illustrates how aggregation of these diverse risks into a singular national security threat commonly labelled Chinese influence can produce alarmist public policy discourse, legislative overreach and mismatched institutional responsibilities. The Paper suggests a set of measures for liberal democracies to manage their engagement with Chinas powerful and increasingly authoritarian party-state. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The evidentiary weight of North Korean defectors' testimony depicting crimes against humanity has drawn considerable attention from the international community in recent years. Despite the attention to North Korean human rights, what remains unexamined is the rise of the transnational advocacy network, which drew attention to the issue in the first place. Andrew Yeo and Danielle Chubb explore the 'hard case' that is North Korea and challenge existing conceptions of transnational human rights networks, how they operate, and why they provoke a response from even the most recalcitrant regimes. In this volume, leading experts and activists assemble original data from multiple language sources, including North Korean sources, and adopt a range of sophisticated methodologies to provide valuable insight into the politics, strategy, and policy objectives of North Korean human rights activism. This book will appeal to students, activists, and scholars interested in human rights, international relations, law, sociology, and media studies. Top experts and leading activists provide valuable insight into the emergence, evolution, and politics of North Korean human rights based on new empirical data and original language material, including North Korean sources.
